Odd behavior with Notepad

A recent oddity has been cropping while I've been using Notepad lately. When saving, the cursor jumps back six spaces. Of course, I haven't hit any other keys besides CTRL+S nor did I touch the mouse. It does not do this everytime and I have not found a way to reproduce this consistently.

Now, I'm not necessarily annoyed by this, but I am curious. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

I vaguely recall such a bug. A similar hard-to-reproduce bug is the way notepad screws up the text window refresh whenever I use word wrap. IIRC the problem's been around since Win98. Fancy MSFT to come up with a proper TEXT editor... :disgust:

Critical" Notepad Bug
I seem to have discovered a new bug in Microsoft Notepad 5.1 (it may also appear in other versions). I'd report it on support.microsoft.com, but there does not appear to be a "Support Centre" for Notepad - a glaring omission. On to the bug.

To reproduce this bug, open Notepad and turn on WordWraptm. Now type away until you wrap around at least one line. Save the file with the cursor at the end of the line, and you should notice that the cursor moves back three characters for each wrapped line you typed. If that motion backwards takes the cursor over a line break in the process, the cursor will move back another character in addition to the others.

This bug does not appear to have been reported elsewhere, so I'm claiming credit for its discovery.

PS - Clearly nothing good can come of this.
PPS - I expect Microsoft will release an emergency hotfix patch within a week.

I've seen it too under the same conditions described above. I learnt to live with it, but now I don't use Windows much anymore, so it doesn't bother me anymore 😛

Yes, they have us working in shifts on this one. All Longhorn development has been halted until this issue has been resolved. Keep your eyes peeled for the Critical QFE, which should be available via Automatic Updates in the next month or two...

I highly recommend Notepad++. It's a quick-loading text editor that you can use just like Notepad, but it has special features for supported languages. Tried it a couple months ago and now I'm hooked.
