"SUWIN caused segment load failure in module USER.EXE"

Gettin that when trying to do an install. Both drives in the machine have been fdisk'd & formatted, so it's a completely clean install. I get this whether I boot from the cdrom or from a floppy. Anyone seen this before? Or have a clue? Fwiw, I've already tried removing the partitions & re-fdisk'ing and reformatting.

Perhaps a bad .cab file? Had a error like yours a long time ago. Do you have another cd you can try?

Yeah, I've tried 2 diff discs. I've tried the install repeatedly. And I get that same error, or others (W98SETUP caused segment load failure in module SETUPX.DLL) each time. I'm starting to suspect maybe the memory is marginal... it IS an old P166 box. ;)

Had something similar here once, it ended up to be the cdrom wasn't reading correctly, took awhile to figure that 1 out....Have you tried installing with only 1 drive connected?

Try installing with just one drive on the primary bus as master and the cdrom as the primary on the secondary. If this doesn't work put the other hard drive in separately and see if it works.

I say this because I chased my tail on a similar problem, SUWIN error, and found it was the hard drive.

Good luck.

p.s. BTW what was installed before and were you experiencing any problems??

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a memory problem. Seems I accidentally mixed some PC66 with PC100 on a PII 400.
