sounds like one needs to get in touch with some od uppers that can put some heat on that mgr. if he/she doesn't honor an ADVERTISED price, they'd better have a GOOD reason... get that mgr's name, call the store, find out when he/she is not there and go back and try again...
well, that's what i would do ;)
good luck!

The OD managers are NOT required to honor the price because it is a mis-print and according to OD corporate, they have already printed retractions in the few newspapers where the ad circulated (check the first section of your newspaper dated 8/26 if you received an ad on Sunday) as well as retractions printed in the store. In most markets this ad was never distributed via the newspaper and is available in-store only or via the sneek-previev on the Internet. B&Ms have already been told NOT to honor the price and it is perfectly legal. If a retraction is not displayed in your local B&M then that is another story. As always the people who jumped on this early got the deal. :(

I feel this is unfair criticism and would not recommend doing this. Saying that, I am one of the fortunate ones who "got in on this deal" and it was entirely at the manager's discretion. Here is how it happened.

I had skimmed this thread Sunday and thought it was a legit deal. When I went to the store yesterday, there was a disclaimer in the glass case where the memory was displayed. I went to a check out counter and asked for a price check which came up at $99.99. The clerk said that was the price and pointed to a sign on the front desk of the store which was a larger copy of the disclaimer. The manager picked up that something was going on and asked if he could help.

I politely told him that the sole reason I came in was to purchase the memory. I also said that I understood mistakes happen and was not going to hold them to the ad, but I was irritated about the error and the inconvenience it had caused me. He said it was a mistake but wanted to make it right. He asked me to wait and walked away. When he returned, he had a memory stick in hand and told the clerk to sell it for $29.99. I thanked him, we both smiled and went on our way.

The handling of this situation is consistent with every other transaction I have had with OD over the years. OD has always treated me fairly and will sometimes go to great lengths to satisfy their customers or right a wrong. From tracking down merchandise in other stores all over the country to discounting or even offering refunds. I wish all business were as conscientious as OD.

In the end, I felt bad for OD because I knew they were going to suffer a loss in the transaction which was not my intent. Bottom line, I think it is unfair to flame OD and definitely would not escalate the issue.

how is it unfair criticism? i'm looking dead at the ad in front of me. plus no retractions have been posted @ ANY od in MY location. i have been shopping @ od BEFORE hot deals and will continue to shop after.
but what about the worth of one's time driving through the traffic? wandering around out in the heat? od not answering the phone while they surf the net? don't cry for od; they helped suborn this climate of rebates -- plus their rebate house (walled lake) is probably the WORST of all, excepting cusa's nrny, at redeeming rebates (and probably proud of it)
plus throw in the fact that pny/od rebates are so time-constrictive and one sees they they shot THEMSELVES in the foot
two weeks from now, don't let od run this special FOR REAL. i am going to be saying "i told yawl so..."

This was already a REAL deal at OD two weeks ago (PNY Offer# 02-48776) . Whoever proofed this week's in-store ad for select OD B&M locations simply forgot to remove DDR from the new offer. OD caught the error the on Saturday, the day before the ad released and printed a retraction in all the newspapers that carried the ad which was less than ten according to OD corporate. They also notificed all the B&Ms affected by the error via their FAX alert system that there was an error and to post a retraction in-store. In most areas where this ad is effective, OD does not distribute the ads via the newspaper or mailers. You must go into the actual B&M and pickup the ad. I have seen both the newspaper retraction and instore signs noting the ad error in my area. If your local B&M does not have the retractions displayed, then you will have to fight it out with the manager of that store to get the advertised price, but don't expect OD corporate to stand behind your position as they have officially retracted the offer. Good Luck!;)

Nice is the way to handle it...

Stop # 1 - Manager couldn't find the PNY ram for the correct price - rang up at 99 ea. - He then went back and looked in the case and asked me if the centon 256 drr would be ok since it was priced at $69.99 - I told him ok, he grabbed 2 of them and did a price override to $29.99ea. I handed him the 20 off 50 and he punched in the code - total $40 + tax for 512mg DDR. These will go in the new motherboard I'll pick up at the computer show in 2 weeks.

Stop #2 - Same deal the PNY rang up @ $99 - manager adjusted to $54.99 per ad - took the 20 off 50 coupon so 2 more for $90.00 - he went over and punched in the sku on another computer and printed out 2 rebate slips for me. I showed him the rebate slips didn't say the DDR ram - He said if it was denied to return and he would refund the $50.00 to my credit card. Gave me his card to make sure I knew who to talk with. These were picked up for a friend that had to work...

Both times I just stayed very nice and I didn't even have to ask for them to make the adjustments, they did them on their own.

so in all 1gig DDR for $80 - not a bad day.

The important thing is to remember the manager didn't make the mistake, and being nice goes a long way!

I agree. I have bought so many items at OfficeDepot at a ridiculously low price, by just being nice about asking to use competitors coupons, pricematches, ect.

Went to an OD near its HQ in Florida at about 5 PM today. Played dumb and waited patiently for about 15 minutes while a manager-type researched the problem. Finally, after putting up with my stubborn (but nice) patience, the mgr sold one stick of the PNY DDR RAM to me for $30. Told me that it was an ad mistake and not to tell all my buddies to come pick it up at that price :D He also said that the corporate folks at Delray Beach were tech-ignorant and cause a lot of problems with poorly-done ads. Very pleasant guy.

Two awesome deals at OD in two weeks! (The other being the 40GB Maxtor for $10+tax) These guys can't stay in business for long . . .

1YP (THANKS to NealH!!)

edit: The RAM has SAMSUNG chips

A good example of how the calm "nice" approach can work.

I wasnt even looking for one, was just out hunting for deals, when I saw they forgot to take down the yellow shelf tag that ended Sat. It even said so. I asked....NICELY...about that tag. The manager without hesitation, said she would honor the $34.99 price, no rebates needed.

I had a nicely new printed OD $20 off $50 coupon...

I grabbed that Centon 256meg DDR, a Memorex 40x (50-Pack) spindle, and a Lynksys 10/100 ethernet card, for $48.51 after tax. With the $10 Memorex and $10 Linksys rebates, all of this is $28.51 total.

I didnt even want the memory, but the manager was soooooo nice about it :)

"Nice" Receipt

PS the Linksys card is $14.99 with $10 rebate (printed at register) SKU#160276

Excellent find NealH!! Went to my local OD today and purchased TWO PNY 256MB DDR sticks for $10.69 each. They would have sold me more but I got the last two in stock!

  1. Original price = $99.99
Price adjustment per advertisement = $59.99
    Less $5.00 instant rebate = $54.99
Less $25 MIR (taken off instantly because of no rebate coupon) = $29.99
    Less "$20 off $50" OD coupon = $9.99
    Plus sales tax = $10.69

I picked up a stick of the DDR yesterday at the Port Richey, FL store for $29.99. Like everyone else, the rebate didn't list the DDR's SKU/UPC codes, so I'll head back today and attempt to get the manager to give a rebate credit.

The chips on my stick are Infineon...oh well. The price is lower than last December's way low DDR prices.
