OCZ Vertex 4 128GB Solid State Drive Review with 1.4 R6 firmware

Looks very promising. I was tempted for a second, but I'm gonna stick with 1.3 until the official release.

woo hoo!.. up to nearly a week of uptime now with this public release version!

So much for the.. "stops functioning and requires a reboot after 5 hours of use" theory. lol

Wow, quite the accomplishment. OCZ managed to keep the most reliable known controller stable after several revisions. Storagereview.com seems to be really enjoying their Indilinx Infused™ drive.

yeah.. the drives are selling.

Speed is like sex. Not all will to admit they want more.. but most will take it at the right price. lol

Oh but I'm sure there's bluescreens and reboots and crashes, because it's OCZ. You're just not seeing them. They're happening when you blink. Yeah, that's it.

*shrugs* I've got two Vertex 2 120GBs (the older gen) that have been working perfectly for the last 1.5 years.

I didnt even know that OCZ sent drives out for review with release candidate firmware. It's been well joked that OCZ's release firmware is a beta, but these are actually beta's. This company never ceases to amaze.

If there are reports of problems with the Vertex 4 then please link to a source otherwise it is just bitterness over Vertex 3.

The link was already given, Storagereview.com.

UPDATE 5/8/12 9:00AM - The latest patch offers more stable performance, although still had one problem crop up 5 hours into testing. Still performing endurance tests.

Here's an interesting report of several users needing a Ctr-Alt-Del to get their V4 drives recognized and booting.

oh wow, instability in a release candidate firmware, gee what a shocking development. But of course, if they waited to produce a stable firmware you'd dig on them for waiting so long between firmware releases, and why don't they release a release candidate already?

Is this more of your sarcasm? Because it wasn't detected or funny in the first place.

Release candidate / beta firmware should remain with OCZ's beta testers. Thats the whole point. It should not be released for the general public to "play" with nor should it go out to tech websites to review only for their review to become scrap when a newer firmware comes out.

Nobody would dig anybody for taking the time to thoroughly test a firmware before releasing it. Intel and Samsung have made their SSD business model on thoroughly tested but infrequent firmware updates and it has been hugely successful for them.

OCZ on the other hand have a business model of "out the door as quick as possible and fix it later" which subjectively may also have been successful, but not without a continuing PR disaster along the way. This model also freezes out OEM's and large enterprises who will go with a more stable supplier.

You haven't truly owned an OCZ SSD until you've developed a persecution and inferiority complex. I hope they don't delete your rebate along with your SMART data. lol

why does everything have to be so "one way or the other" around here?

Random thoughts:

OCZ is THE most aggressive company in the SSD business and because of that very fact.. they are able to pool MASSIVELY larger amounts of test data over larger cross sections of hardware and users in a MUCH quicker fashion. This helps drive the rest of the industry to push harder and faster to accelerate controller/firmware development process.

The negative effect is found right here in this very thread as users are unwittingly leveraged into beta testing these products and giving feedback. However ineffective or overly biased that feedback may be from those throwing tantrums about their data or drive loss. But sometimes it's hard to have sympathy for those who shouldn't be mucking around with building custom systems for lack of basic PC/software knowledge or at least learn how to back up important data just in case of a scenario's like that one.

Some call a drive superior because it has proven stability while some others would rather have the fastest drive available at any particular time with the added promise of further firmware development to improve speeds(and compatability) even more. You may not know when or how much your "owners bonus" will be.. but you have a pretty good idea based on history that you may be getting one at some point. lol

I'm an enthusiast type OC'er and I also use my machine for business purposes to make money even faster. Obviously I would not be able to do that successfully if the rumors of OCZ drives constantly going bye-bye we're true. Especially, as often as some will make the issue out to be.

Successfully running 6x vertex 2's in raid 0 for over 2 years now should provide some clue as to the percentage of drives affected because I'm seriously never that lucky in life. If something is flawed?.. it's a safe bet that I can break it.

There are hugely vast amounts of users just like me out there who will trade some amount compatibility/stability for the chance at the fastest hardware available at any given time in these products evolution.

I really dig OCZ's balls out attitude and will continue to buy from them as long as they maintain it. Good to keep in mind that there are car's, truck's and even off-road toy's running Turbo's, Superchargers, and Nitrous all around you at any given time. The market for the most powerful and cutting edge stuff is going nowhere any time soon as long as there are power crazed individuals out there.. and OCZ will keep making a killing in this industry because that segment is no stranger to taking risks. Especially if they charge less than the other guys as people are more willing to take chances and put up with difficulties when money can be saved. Plenty of gambler's out there.. that's for sure.

And with that in mind.. you shouldn't be telling me what I need or can have?.. and I shouldn't be shooting down your logic for buying a particular mfgrs product irregardless of my thoughts on their processor firmware weaknesses. To each.. his own.

My story is pretty much opposite. Started using SSD's from Corsair Gen 1 and Gen 2.....They constantly died and I was sending them in for replacements. Had my Vertex 3 for over a year...No issues yet. Updated the firmware with every firmware release...never a problem.
