Ocz Vertex 2 or Intel G2 120GB?

I need more storage. I have to decide between the Ocz Verex 2 and the Intel G2 120GB. On paper the Ocz beats the intel at everything, but I know that can't be true. Their must be something I am missing or something ocz does not mention. So which drive is all around faster? This is for a gaming machine.....

Thanks...

I think I'd prefer the Sandforce controller over Intel's (at the moment). I think I'd probably just go for the cheapest Sandforce 1200 implementation from a reputable company. Right now, I"m liking GSkill.

I too would get the OCZ as it beats the G2 in most cases & is a little more affordable (unless you're lucky and can get one for sale). Anand has a few benches measuring a custom set of apps to showcase real world usage patterns, so using that as a general guide, we can see the OCZ trumping the G2 easily.

Though I think many here will agree that despite the performance gaps, the insane speeds of SSDs would make it rather difficult to distinguish between either hardware in real life. So I guess you're good either way.

alot of problems with firmware/sleep state on sandforce. i'm on my 2nd sandforce. random drive not found on boot/sleep; bsod.

I switch back to intel x25-m 80gb and it's all gone.

multiple brands - all sandforce.

what good is that?

Why can't it? In benchmarks for the most part the OCZ Vertex 2 does beat an Intel G2.

In actual use you probably won't notice a difference.

As a few here have stated, Intel drives are pretty bulletproof. Basically if you are the "not sure" kind, then get the Intel because you won't stay up at night worrying whether you made the right SSD purchasing choice.

😀 LOL, I'm not sure anyone actually does that, but funny to think about since it seems as if many people posting in forums totally AGONIZE over their purchases. I don't know why? :\ It's an SSD (or CPU, or graphics card, etc.). It isn't a life or death situation and unless you crank up benchmarks, you likely won't notice a difference between one decent SSD and another, or one decent graphics card and another of the same level, or an Intel hex core versus an AMD hex core, or Corsair RAM versus G.Skill RAM... or a bunch of other choices people can't seem to make, or make out to be more than they are.

The C300 is also a good drive, but I've heard it is picky about the controller you hook it up to, plus it only works well with Windows 7 (with an OS that has Trim).

So far, haven't regretted getting my Intel x25-M 120gb. Seems snappier than my previous OCZ 60gb Vertex with the Indilinx controller. Never had a problem with that one either, but I only had it for a little over a month.

If you're into showing off your benchmark specs, get the Vertex 2. I would be very surprised though, in real usage, if you were blindfolded, as to which drive you had in your system, that you would be able to tell the difference.

I currently have a 120gb G.Skill Phoenix pro and have not had any issues....knocking on wood.
I just got my 128gb C300 today; will install this week.

As to the OP; If its only Vertex2 or Intel; I would pick intel; I have heard many problems with the OCZ drives and I do not think OCZ are what they once were.

I may try an intel drive too just for fun and really want to see what the 3rd gen Intel drives will have to offer.

Isn't the intel 120GB drive using tech from like 2008? Where as most of the crucial and ocz are using up to date tech?

Intel vs Indilinx, I'd go Intel
Intel vs Sandforce, I'd probably go Sandforce. I don't doubt there were bugs at release, but I think they're more mature now.

Also, you have a lot of choices of brand with Sandforce, so you don't have to go OCZ. They're quality seems to have gone downhill.

I looked at and like the 120, but I don't think I need that much space. Will probably go with the 80.

I have the Agility 2 60GB and the Intel G2 80GB. Even though it's in the slower system, the Agility 2 feels faster. Definitely faster boot time, and simply a bit snappier. The Intel has definitely lost performance over time and requires frequent manual trimming. The Agility 2 doesn't have that option, but it's known to be better at handling maintenance automatically. That being said, I'd go for Intel if you want reliability - I've read almost no negative reviews on dead drives from Intel...OCZ hasn't had such great user reviews on reliability.

what good is that?

Intel hands down.

Just put it in and it works.

Does not get any easier than that! 😉

See this is my experience with Intel products, and why I was heavily leaning towards Intel if I do get one for my PS3. Thanks guys!

Well Intel had their fair share of FW problems themselves and by now that seems to be a problem of the past for both companies (for now, let's see what happens with the next gen controllers)

But Intel wins hands down when looking at hardware compatibility, though a quick google search for the MB should show if there are compatibility problems or not.

I have Intel (160GB) and Sandforce (120GB) drives and can't tell any difference between them. They're both wicked fast. Not had an issue with either, but I'd still rather have an Intel for every day use. Just a piece of mind sort of thing.

I looked at a lot of ssd benches and for gaming-[g2-160] -in pc mark came out not bad , some site's can show it in the top 2 in the real world use.
-, also what others here have said "they trust intel ssd" so I went with 2x120 g2,s @199x2 cnd vs 160gb @ $ 389 cnd ,
-gives me 240 gb -format, -10%[raid] still leaves target size of 200 gb ish for 400.00 cnd not a bad deal.[unless the g3 come's out next week lol]

are we talking about this drive:
OCZ-SSD3-2VTX120 3.5" 120GB SSD Vertex II

because its a lot cheaper than intel over here in Australia.

I've currently got 80gb intel, looking for more space: I need something reliable though.

I'll use the 80gb as photoshop scratch 🙂

eeek. I had a very bad experience this year with onboard raid. I've sworn off it until its either under linux, or I get a dedicated card with battery back up.
