This is a new Indilinx based drive from OCZ. Uses the same 1.5 firmware that the Vertex/Agility uses (tweaked for NAND values). Includes TRIM and Garbage Collection built in (using FW 1.5). Uses Intel 34nm NAND. Supposed to be slower than Agility/Vertex but scores at OCZ's forums indicate that it is faster than my Vertex ( :| ).

Benchmarks at OCZ forum

Make it $278.70 after 2% Bing cash back and rebate too!

Out of curiosity, what NAND does the Agility/Vertex use?

In any case, that looks to be an awesome deal. Better price per GB than the 60GB Agility I got during the shell shocker deal. Now I want one so my desktop can have an SSD too....

edit: Actually comes out just a little more than my Agility. Still not bad....

Faster (overall) than my Vertex 60gb with twice the capacity, and at this price only $40 more expensive. Are these the ones that it's a crapshoot on which NAND is in them? I'm guessing that the first ones to market will have the "good" flash to generate word of mouth.

Any other reviews out there?

The Agility uses up to 8 types of NAND IIRC (maybe more). The Vertex uses a few, most recently the Intel 34nm NAND. I've read that both use Samsung NAND as well. That is one reason there are so many versions of the firmware in the "self checking" updater. The updater checks the drive and installs the correct version of the firmware with correct timing for the NAND type.

No reviews yet but I've read at the OCZ forums that these use Intel 34nm NAND (as do some/all of the newer VERTEX drives).

PLEASE, guys, stop posting these deals! I can only withstand so much temptation, then I'll crumple and buy... and I'll do it the day before they release the next version with twice the bandwidth and a lower cost.

This product is just about "there": an acceptable capacity and an affordable price. Please play-up all its shortcomings so I can hold-off another three months!

There aren't any for this model it looks like 🙁😉 It has garbage collecting/TRIM...120GB capacity, which is plenty for me, and insane read/writes.

blah, I might just end up buying it.

Hell, I've got a new 120GB Vertex and told myself that I'm not buying until the next generation comes out and is cheaper. I'm still tempted to pick this up, lol.

How does one know what type of flash they get? Which is better? Or is it a crapshoot right now, for this model?

The only thing that I've read is that Tony from OCZ stated that this unit used Intel 34nm NAND. Anand may have said the same thing back in August....goes to check.

Edit:

From Anand...

OCZ recently announced the Solid 2, a horrible name (the old Solid was based on a JMicron controller) but similar approach to the Agility.

The first Solid 2 drives are being built now and they use the same Indilinx controller as the Vertex and Agility. The difference? Once again, it’s the flash. These drives use Intel’s 34nm flash.

The initial Solid 2 specs were very low and I’ve received confirmation that they were simply conservative. Performance is changing on a daily basis now and OCZ simply made the announcement to get pre-orders started. Apparently there are issues getting the Indilinx controller working with Intel’s 34nm flash but OCZ is making progress.

I am going to wait 1-2 hours, read some more reviews, but for the price, this seems like the winner to replace my mechanical drive...and finally touch some SSD's.

Where do you get that auto flash updater? Any good tools/guides to properly set up windows 7 64bit on one of these drives?

EDIT : I don't see any reviews that anand did on this specific drive : OCZSSD2-2SLD120G

Good tweak guide for Win7 with SSD - Don't recommmend the Ramdisk as it trashed my system

You should not need to update the flash at this time - should ship with 1.5 (per Tony as OCZ).

When I get it, how do I check it it's Intel based? So I can post 🙂

EDIT : Just ordered

The flash will be Intel based. Obviously, the controller is an Indilinx Barefoot controller. Other than opening the drive up (and killing the warranty), there is no way to tell.

Good luck and keep us posted on the benchmarks and "real world" feel.

Had a newegg gc burning a hole in my pocket. So I ended up getting one as well to pair with my Vertex. Actually slightly pissed that the Solid 2 benchmarks from the ocz forums are faster then my Vertex.

Me too, especially considering that my Vertex cost over $40 more than this...and it was on a big $100 off special. I think, from what I've saw, that the Vertex is slightly faster at random reads/writes but this drive seems to be faster at sequential. Let us know how it goes (I assume Raid? ).

Will do Engineer, thanks for the post...i saw it over at Slickdeals, but wasn't sure it was time yet. But those benchmarks are amazing, with almost no seek, it will be a new machine!

Yes raid0, been holding off on a Vertex deal but seeing this I figure why not. I also got my vertex on a $100 off special, think it was Circuit City.

Newegg for me. Still, this is a better price...*sigh*. Always a day late...and more than a dollar short (especially now), lol.

Hm, I wonder when Tiger Direct will get these. Their Bing CB can get to 15% sometimes and it's possible to get really good deals on SSDs before they gouge the price on them.

Otherwise this is one of the best prices I've seen on an SSD that large. 🙂

Here is why you cannot trust many negative reviews from Newegg...lol.

This user purchased this item from Newegg

Pros: Well I ordered this on 1/30. In order to get the $30 rebate I have to return it and the free SD card (which I don't want anyways). They shipped the items separately so I'm out return shipping on both if I return. I'll give 1/5 for OCZ not honoring purchases prior to 2/1/10.
Cons: bad reputation compared to Intel SSDs
Other Thoughts: Impulse buy. When I return I'll probably just get an Intel at this point since I'm waiting anyways

So this guy gives it 1 out of 5 because he bought it "before" the rebate started and is now pissed because he cannot get the rebate. Then proceeds to slam OCZ (not Newegg) because of this? Wow.🙄

I absolutely HATE you mr. OP. I have avoided SSDs till now!

On second thought, thank you for showing me a deal where it was worth purchasing. Just don't show me any more, I cant afford it!
