i have this 1 yr old OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W (OCZ600MXSP) that rattles when the PC heats up doing anything intensive. when it's idle and doing non-intensive things, it's not making a noise but when i am playing 3D games and it gets hot, i start hearing rattling from the PSU. took me a while to isolate it to the PSU but i am 100% sure. is this a bad sign and should i RMA it before something worse happens?

Only moving part in a psu is the fan, so there's your problem. The fan is most likely thermal controlled, so as you play games, the fan will spin faster to keep the psu cooler. Check to see if its loose, and if it is, see if you can secure it without voiding the warranty.

If you have a defective fan, you can either RMA it or take it appart (voiding warranty in the process) to replace the fan yourself.

You should probably get it replaced/fixed before the fan stops spinning at all, putting the psu at risk of overheating.

Check the reviews. Some of these psu's have sleeve bearing fans. Sleeve bearing fans can have their bearings wear out.

ok for some reason, it seems like when i remove my side panel of the PC case, the rattling noise stops. it only rattles when the panel is on. does anyone know what this means?

I have an OCZ 600W modxstream PSU as well. There's a plastic sheet that covers half of fan to force air from the front of the psu to exit out the back, but it seems like it might be prone to rattling.

i'm not even sure anymore... i was positive it was the PSU... mind you this only happens when my PC gets really really heated up.

Have you checked all the screws for your mobo, cpu cooler, fans, or maybe even the fans on the graphics card itself ?

The (sleeve-bearing) fan on my Antec Basiq 500W went out in around a year. Was going to RMA it to Antec and have them replace the fan, but I never got around to it.

Perhaps when you remove the side panel, the PSU doesn't heat up as much, so no rattling. You said it only rattled when hot.

yea it only rattles when playing the most taxing games. however, even when it's hot, removing the side panel stops the rattling. i'm pretty sure the PSU is the cause of rattling though.
