Hello all, here is what my new gaming rig will most likely be -

AMD Athlon 64 S939 3500+ 90nm Winchester

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
1GB OCZ EL Rev. 2 Platinum Dual Channel (2x512MB) PC-3200

Well anyway....I was gonna use the OCZ Powerstream 470w until I heard that it was out of production and almost every place I checked didn't have it in stock. Would a 420w Powerstream be able to handle this setup? Also, I will be OC'ing that Winchester a little bit.
 
The 420 should be more than adequate. The reviews I have read say that these powersupplies are actually underated. I can't remember where I read the reviews at but I factored that in when I bought my 520 about 4 months ago. It is running a decently overclocked Prescott, 7 hard drives, 2 optical drives, 2-120mm fans, 2-80mm fans and a couple of other things. I don't have a power hungry video card but I wouldn't be afraid to put it in there on top of the rest.

I take it you aren't worried about a quiet pc with that 92mm Tornado. 🙂
 
About three weeks ago I went to Monarch and they had the 520 listed for app $120 then it went off their site. Was talking to a Monarch rep last Friday about ordering some of my parts for my computer and I asked him about the powerstream and why it no longer was on their site. He said they were having some issues with it burning up some motherboards and that they hopefully were going to get the problems work out (to paraphrase). After thinking it over,(I was dead set on getting a OCZ powerstream from all the + reviews that I have read) I decided not to go with the powerstream. I ordered a unit from PC Power & Cooling yesterday. A lot of people will say its overkill, but i didn't want the thought of it frying my components $$$ every time I turned on my computer.
 
OCZ released a statement saying that many products got dammaged in shipping and have been recalled. The OCZ will be equal or better to the PCP&C. Dont think any less of em because of a shipping defect.

Other than that, there have been no such problems with computers frying. The Monarch guy was talking out of his ass and had no clue what he was talking about in the first place.

Well, I won't be ordering the parts till right before (1day) or after xmas, so would everything be alright by then do you think?
 
Alright and I ask again, are you sure a 420w Powerstream will be more than adequate for those specs. I'm just a very cautious guy. 😉
 
Yeah you should be just fine. Those PSU are known to run up to 100Watts higher (albeit for like 5 mins). You should be absolutely fine. 33A on the 12V also 🙂

Most systems will never draw more than 200 watts.

The more important thing is about their rails. They gotta be high, and they gotta be stable. You'll have both if you go with a PC P&C, OCZ Powerstream, or Fortron.

so it takes 3 weeks to get them back on the shelves? and their still not there? This is not the only indicator that suggests that OCZ had a problem. If a person uses the SEARCH mode on this forum, as so many people recommend the newbies to use, you would also find other discussions and events that support this fact. Furthermore, to say this man is talking out his ass indicates that a person probably doesn't believe what he has to say. He is there to sell products... a person would assume that he would like to sell the OCZ powerstream if he had them. Common sense tells you that he isn't there to bash OCZ,its his job to sell products and make money. I am grateful that he was forthright and able to provide accurate information so that people could make rational decisions. Rather, than for some, to make assumptions which leads one to believe a person is talking out his ass.

I am quite sure that these people are somewhat in the know... its their job, they do it all day long.
