I have to test a motherboard before I take advantage of the RMA number I got -- after I had a bad mishap with a BIOS flash (forgot to clear the CMOS and reset to stock settings first).

So I need some cheap RAM. This fit into my contingency plans for Xmas gifts to my brothers coming up in December. Of course, if I were to make such a gift, I'd prefer that the RAM is more than just "Value-RAM."

I made a quick search at PC Club today -- I have to get this settled before my month runs out on the possible use of the RMA number. I have fresh BIOS PLCC chips to replace the original, and I can pop the latter back in if I really need to send the board in under warranty.

HOW . . . . IN THE WORLD . . . . CAN THEY OFFER THESE PLATINUM DDR2-800 KITS FOR $39.99???!!!! What's going ON with this?

I went ahead and purchased one. Comments and insights eagerly sought here. I haven't researched the skinny on the OCZs; they're probably not made with Micron D9's; but the Platinum DDR400's I got for my socket-478 system and that of my brother were stellar.

Is this deal good? "Just OK?" Or WHAT??!!

Used to be, and not long ago . . . . in fact, in March, I got 1GB of their DDR400 "Platinums" for an older machine for about $70 or $80.

DDR1 is still kind of expensive considering what DDR2 costs nowadays....1GB of DDR2 can be had for around $45-$60, so 1GB for $40 is a deal, but not one worth getting excited about.

smaller memory kits are always cheaper, in terms of memory not physical size. It's because of the fact that they consume more slots and are easier to manufacturer.

Soon if not already happening, the 512mb stick is the 512mb of flash jump drive.
No one seems to want it anymore.
