OCZ Octane S2 vs. OCZ Petrol 128gb

I'm wondering if there is any performance difference between these two drives. They're both on sale for $100 at NCIX and I'm wondering which is the better buy.

I haven't been able to find decent reviews of either drive. They seem worth it for the price.

Thoughts?

The Octane S2 is a SATA 3Gbps drive, while the Petrol is a SATA 6Gbps drive.

The Petrol has async NAND, while the Octane has sync NAND, although I'm not sure if the S2 also has sync NAND.

They both use the new Indilinx Everest controller, which is pretty damn good.

My motherboard only has SATA 3gbps ports so the Sata 6gbps doesn't matter much to me (although I guess it's nice in the event that I upgrade my system).

I just read on newegg that the Petrol scores 7.7 in the WEI which is exactly the same as what the Octane S2 apparently gets.

I guess there's not much difference between the drives if any.

as Wendy said..

petrol = asynch in a 6G flavor for more top end speed(if you have speed matched storage to really take advantage of it)

Octane S2 = synch in 3G flavor for more low end grunt(for which an OS volume would thank you for when multitasked harder)

Personally, I would never buy an asynch equipped SSD from any mfgr due to sales on synch versions getting close enough on occasion that it wouldn't be worth it in the long run. Unless of course you have a very basic usage or don't mind selling off older hardware as you upgrade down the road. Of course some people out there feel that fast.. is fast enough.. and any SSD will do.

Only synch or toggle equipped 6G SSD for me from here on out regardless of the hardware's sequential speed capability since they rarely saturate a 3G chipset where the OS likes to live in the small randoms anyways.

Thanks for that, groberts. 🙂

It looks like the Octane S2 will be a marginally better drive for me overall seeing as I don't have Sata 3 on my motherboard and I could use the additional "OS grunt".
