Common knowledge? That would be knowing that you do not exceed your rail outputs with the molex > PCI-E adapters. In which case, they're perfectly fine to use.

Look I'm not an expert on the subject. I'm just trying to say there are some unknowns here to take into consideration. Cables, connectors and the limitations of the same. I'm familiar with rails and I'm also familiar with the standard recommendation for a PSU. A bit surprised nobody else seems to be, so I won't keep arguing. As for those looking to get themselves a PSU for a system, I recommend reading up on those recommendations. :)

If you get yourself a brand PSU without that connector you need, consider it's not meant to be there in the first place.

Let me try explain it another way, with an example. Imagine you got a PSU with a connector. The connector is designed with some specs in mind, just like the rails. If you take an 8-pin, the 12 v smaller cables inside determine the max amperage the cable should carry. This idea could translate into other parts as well. If you plug a splitter there you might exceed specs of the components, not necessarily the rail mind you.
