OcUK selling shares in their crack rack! :o

Confused

Elite Member
Alex was just browsing the web at mine (going to a mate's gig tonight at a local music venue) and came across the following! Buy shares in the OcUK Crack Rack :Q

The annoying thing is that they will probably get quite a bit of money of it, which means they will get more seti WUs, and they could even use it for other projects!

We really need to do something like this! I would be willing to buy at least a share in a TacRaq (Team anandtech crack rack, well i thought it was a good name 😉)

Confused and Alex

I would think if you sponsored an entire node you should get credit for the WUs 🙂

There has been some rumblings over at DSLR about building a team crackrack :Q

At first blush, it seems like a good idea. But I think it would be like going in partners on a "boat". And that never works out! :Q

Well Smokie that is because you should never buy a boat.

Remember, if it floats or flies always rent and never buy 😉

Do you know the worst thing you can do to a boat?

........................................................................................

PUT IT IN THE WATER! 😛

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've also heard that the worst thing you can do to a computer is :

PUT ANYTHING BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM ON IT! :Q

/except SETI of course 😉

I thought about doing something like this, but I came to the same conclusion that Smokeball came to. Great way to get some $$ but who owns what? Who pays for electricity (7.2 KWH per computer per day ) Big mess if you ask me.

I just saved up some $$ and bought enough cheap parts to build a few ( read 3 ) systems. 2 dual and one single all 1.0 durons.

parts:
Tiger Dual board = $129 (x2)
Iwill kk266 = $50
1.0 duron = $49 (x5)
HSF / ASII = $10 (x5)
Hard drive = $20 (x3)
Video cards = $20 (x3)
400 watt pws = $30 (x3)
DDR 128 Megs = $50 (x2)
SDR 128 Megs = $45

Total outlay not including cases ( who needs 'em? )= $962 for about 25 wu/day. ( I don't have the money for the ram yet, so the Tigers are sitting unused 🙁 )

Evadman,

That makes for a really economical $38.48 @ WU @ Day. I remember when you came up with this yard stick a couple of months ago. Seems getting below $45 @ WU @ Day is pretty hard to do. 😉

Hmm ,nice idea but frought with difficulties ,like Evad & Smokie mentioned

I see OcUK mention that they provide the electricity FOC! ,but somehow thats got to be payed for ,& I can't see that buying shares is going to cover it as that money goes to the hardware.

I wonder if I can get 1 of the OcUk guys to come here & add there thoughts.......

Some info from a sticky thread of theres :-

Crunchers should be aware that shares in the OcUK STOMP MONSTER may be purchased at a cost of £23.50 (incl VAT).

If the share is the only item on the order, there will be a £1 + VAT handling charge per order bringing the Total cost to £24.67 for one share. Of course, more than one share on an order does not attract further handling charges, so further shares on the same order would be £23.50 inc VAT each.

This means that you can own a part of the Stomp Monster which is housed at OcUK HQ. The board can be populated to a total of 70 layers with the existing Windows licences. Each layer costs £285.41 (inc. VAT). The shares can be purchased at the on-line store. Click on the Team OcUK STOMP-MONSTER Shares section at the bottom.

When you purchase a STOMP-MONSTER share at £20 +VAT you are not purchasing a share as in stocks and shares. You are purchasing a Unit of Part-Ownership of hardware which is supplied to you on the understanding that it is used within the STOMP-MONSTER at OcUK HQ. Unfortunately, that means we have to charge VAT at the standard rate.

Shipping is charged at £1 because we post every purchaser an invoice for the supply of the required Units.

The above procedure complies with all customs & excise requirements and indeed any other legal requirements.

There are enough Windows 98 licences to cover a STOMP-MONSTER with 70 layers.

It would seem on the face of it that electricity is paid for out of thier profits ? ,I'd guess.......

As you should know from the information available on the OcUK pages regarding this, Mark Proudfoot, the proprieter of Overclockers UK (Esnet Ltd) has graciously stated that all the electricity used by the Stomp-monster shall be donated by the company to the project.

The "shares" are used to pay for hardware only, the W98SE lisences already exist, and the workunits go into an account for the machine not spread amongst the "share holders".

It is probably easier for OcUK to do this as they are a hardware supplier.

Actually I have been doing quite a bit of research trying to find the best way to accomplish this economically:

PC Chips M841LR motherboard $65.00 (Integrated Video/Lan but with an 1800+ will churn out a WU every 3:40 roughly)
AMD 1800+ XP Processor $111.00
CPU FAN $12.00
128MB DDR PC2100 $33.00
Used hard drive $20.00

If you figure about $15-20 Shipping you get about $256-261 for ~6.4 WUs per day.

This information is provided for anyone who wishes to try their own crack rack 🙂 I built my first 3 nodes with the ECS K7S5A, but I think the next ones will use the m841LR board.

*$329USD after shipping at NewEgg. I could have gone cheaper with some of the parts, and for seti DDR might be a better solution. But this seemed the easiest and the cheapest without getting any really shoddy parts (that I know of).

I just remembered something i read some years ago about sailing. 😉

Sailing: The fine art of getting wet and becomming ill
While slowly getting nowhere at great expence

I really havent got it yet - What is the point of buying shares in this thing, if you dont get credit for the WUs it churns out? (or at least some of them)

Yes i think your right, thats why i never sail big boats. Fast dingy sailing is cool so long as u like a big rush and really don't mind getting wet. Or in my experiemnce nearly killing yourself a few times!

Its for the team, a very selfless, trusting & generous donations by its members.
Fair play to them but I wouldn't be up for it!😉

Though I understand that if the project gets mothballed the hardware is sold off & the money goes back to the donaters ,that doesn't explain what would happen to the account & all its WU's!.
The other thing that can't be accounted for is what if a donator wants to leave OcUK? SHOL then I guess!😉

Maybe this is an idea: Here at SETI@Netherlands all the members donated their old junky hardware: Old mobo's, procs', memory modules etc. etc. From all that old junk some guys from our team build: S@NL - JunkMountain! Currently it's doing about 9-10 WU's/day, but future upgrades to this system are already planned. Check this page out for the webcam. If you're quick you might be able to see it in daylight. It's a bit boring staring into a dark room with a few green leds burning 😉
