We now know the October Surprise is really a late non-surprise - the Nov. 5 announcement of the Saddam verdict.
 
The October suprise is - GWB affair with Condi Rice is revealed (I read it in one of the tabloids, so it must be true), - and Condi is actually a man.

I hate to break it to you, but the government debt has been setting a new "record" every year since the 1940's, minus the few years in the late 90's where we had a surpluss.

Secondly, and even more importantly, the $260 billion deficit is rather low in terms of GDP. So we are going in the right direction, just need to make sure we keep going that way.

Spending still increased 7% last year, WAY to fast.
 
I fear GWB might attack Iran with no warning----but also figure that will be delayed until after the election.----GWB has only two years left to start ww3. Plenty of time left yet.

But conventional bombing can really damage Iranian infrastructure---but to even touch the nuclear sites,
its gonna take some nuclear bunker busters.

Someone--anyone---tell me GWB is not that crazy!

Such an attack could be expected to unleash a wave of military violence all over Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and elsewhere against American forces and interests and against oil wells, pipelines and loading vacilities, as well as a mining of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, with a resulting skyrocketing of global oil prices, the real goal of this new war by the U.S. would be ensuring Republican control of the House and Senate.

What is deeply troubling here is the total silence on the part of the Democratic Party opposition. Not one Democrat in Congress, and as far as I know, not one Democratic candidate for Congress--not even anti-war insurgent Ned Lamont in Connecticut, has demanded an answer from Bush and the Pentagon for the obvious military buildup around Iran, or about published reports that the U.S. already has special forces in side Iran backing the terrorist organization MEK, and selecting targets for U.S. bombardment.

If and when the U.S. attacks Iran, leading to a predicable--if temporary--rallying around the flag by the American public, and to an upset win by incumbent Republican congressional candidates, Democrats will have only themselves to blame for the debacle.

Go back to my posts in the Lieberman-Lamont thread-I always said this is going to be a tight race and that (unfortunately) Lieberman has an excellent chance of winning. I'm from CT and am very familiar with this race. Since the primary Lieberman has gotten enormous sums of money from GOP sources, as well as advice from Rove and defacto support from Bush, Cheney and Rell (GOP governor of CT). I always said this was going to be a tight race and it is going to be. What I called wrong was the amount of support the official GOP candidate was going to get-I was thinking 10-15% and he's currently hovering around 4%. The GOP candidate has raised approximately $250,000 and runs no TV ads (Lieberman and Lamont have spent $25M between them to date, with Lieberman leading in the spending race).

The race is now narrowing. The first three-candidate debate was last night and the GOP candidate gave a stellar performance (one of those swing for the bleachers jobs). Every vote he gets will come out of Lieberman's pocket. Presently the gap between Lieberman and Lamont is 8%, not 10%, and I predict it will be half that (or less) in a week.

Whether Lieberman wins is how much effective support the GOP can give him, and how fed up we CT voters are with the Lieberman/GOP wing. We have a number of very tight Congressional races in CT this year, and it is lookiing like we will turn out several GOP incumbents (Shays, Simmons and Nancy Johnson are all GOP incumbents and all running the race of their lives). Lieberman, incidentally, has refused to indicate who he supports in any of those races despite his claim that he is still a Democrat.

Lieberman's situation shows the power of the incumbency and the benefit of having local media in your pocket. He also is running a Rove/Bush type campaign, constantly labeling Lamont as some sort of far out nutjob.

Hopefully come this November we in CT will send our real life Mr. Smith to Washington.

10-17-2006 Letter tells Naturalized California Hispanics to not vote as it is a federal crime

The state attorney general's office is investigating a letter received by some Southern California Hispanics that says it is a crime for immigrants to vote and tells them they could be jailed or deported if they go to the polls next month.

It's a very malicious and degrading letter. It's to pull Latinos down and make them afraid," said Benny Diaz, who is running for City Council in Garden Grove. He said his wife and five other people he knows had received the letter.

The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients:

"You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time."

The truth is that immigrants who become naturalized citizens can legally register to vote.

Nathan Barankin, a spokesman for state Attorney General Bill Lockyer, said the letter was "something we are investigating aggressively right now."

He said the sender could be charged with a felony and receive up to three years in state prison.

Several of the people who received the letters appeared to be naturalized citizens, said John Trasvina, interim president and general counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

If the dems take both houses of congress---I would give my eye teeth to see the expression on Bush's face when he first hears the end results.

Sort of a Herman Goring type line---at that moment---I knew the jig was up.
 
I concede that my predicition (that Bush would announce a major strategy change in Iraq) was dead wrong. At this point it appears he is waiting on his commission's report (due after the election) and given Bush's statement that Rumsfeld is doing a fantastic job (Bush's words, not mine) and will remain in office for the balance of Bush's term, it is highly unlikely of any meaningful change re Iraq in the foreseeable future.
 
I somewhat disagree with Thump 553,

Gwb seems to have a pre-election strategy---stay the course---and push decisions and scandals past election---so we see a bold front and usual over-optimism.

Once the election is over---and the tea leaves are more readable---then GWB will decide what to do next---and if we get a democratic house and maybe senate, we will discover if GWB is a uniter--or a divider---but still predicting Rummy will be gone if the dems get even one wing of congress.

Spoiled rich kids are unused to discipline--going to be an interesting post election---I won't count GWB out until he is totally gone---wounded animals and lame ducks can be dangerous when backed into corners---if any think GWB is insane---have likely seen nothing yet.--self-delusion die hard.
