Summary of anticipated discussion:

- Sony needs to do a price cut.
- Nintendo prints money.
- The Wii is not a gamer's system.
- Where's Jasper?

Did I miss anything?

This should cover the rest:

Nintendo prints money. Install base. Price drop. Wow, can't believe the PS2 is still selling! Wii play is still on the list! 360 dominates software again, guess it's because PS3 owners only use it as a Blu-ray player. The 360 is for hardcore gamers - not that softcore gamer crap the Wii has. SKU. Price point.

I usually stay out of these but wow at the ps3 number.

Also did GH bomb? I hope so because it deserves it.

I didn't even notice that. GH World Tour was released on Oct 26th so it only had 5 days in the month of October to work with. Still though, LBP was released on Oct 27th (officially) and Fallout 3 was released on Oct 28th.

Something doesn't compute though because I could have sworn that one of the Activision execs said they were going to have problems keeping up with demand.

I'm surprised at Fable II selling almost 800k. I expected it to be in the top 10 but not at #1 with that large amount of sales.

Yeah the Activision execs were trying to hype demand. I see it everywhere.

Those numbers for LBP are _not_ good. I didn't really expect SOCOM to sell like gangbusters, but LBP was THE exclusive appealing-to-everyone title for the PS3 this holiday season. It couldn't even come close to MGS4's numbers. Maybe it'll have a long, Mario-Kart-like tail, but I've got some doubts.

I'm not going to call the game a retail bomb yet, but Sony has to get things in gear, quick.

And I, too, am shocked the Fable 2 sold as well as it did. Not because it's a bad game (in fact, everything points to it being absolutely excellent), but because I didn't really think it had mass appeal. If anything, I was disappointed that Fallout 3 didn't do better than it did - it's easily one of the top 5 games of the year in my book.

I think it will sell well over time but it obviously isn't selling systems.

i had been saying for months that LBP would not be the blockbuster hit sony wishes it would be. it's a cool game and a neat concept, but it's longevity is for such a niche market that i figured it would not be selling much. the game just doesn't have the appeal that they had hoped, and 215k sales in it's launch month is very poor for a game that was getting so much hype.

I wonder how much the recall affected LBP sales. I also wonder how Sony's level moderation policy of LBP will affect LBP sales.

I think it would be fascinating if someone did a study on long-term sales as a function of rating (ESRB and Metacritic), initial sales, and other variables. Lately, with the exception of some of Nintendo's stuff, video games seem to follow a movie-like pattern - most of the sales are in the first couple weeks, and then it almost completely drops off.

Yeah, I wonder if anyone went to buy LBP only to find it wasn't released yet, bought something else instead and never bothered to pick it up?

I have said from the start I don't think LBP will be as big system seller, or seller in general.

I doubt it. SOCOM and Fallout 3 aren't exactly substitutes for LBP. :) And the moderation mess is not something most people have heard about.

It's still possible. I'm not suggesting that it lead to a significant loss of potential sales or is responsible for the numbers we're seeing, just curious if anyone was tricked that doesn't pay as close attention to video games as people on this forum.

I still have plans to maybe get a PS3 because I want to play Valkyria Chronicles. I was interested in LBP but the moderation reports I've heard over the past couple days make me not so interested.

but yes you are right the casuals probably haven't heard about that.

Your NA stats is a poor indication of overall game sales. LBP sold a total of 756K units world wide after 3 weeks, and is ranked #3 in weekly sales. Fallout 3 and Fable II both have strong launch sales, but dropped off and has sold less than LBP overall. Wii Fit is insane. It'll hit 10 million units sold next week.

GoW2, another FPS people go gaga over.

Overall sales from your link
Fallout 3 (Xbox 360) - 799,504 (1,232,744 if you include PS3 sales)
Fable 2 - 1,486,176
LBP - 756,812

I don't see how that is super bad for LBP if those world wide numbers are real. The real problem is that it didn't sell any consoles and at this point PS3 is going to have a really bad winter if they don't price drop immediately.

I also saw a report yesterday that Blu ray sales are tanking because of the economy.

Um... no. Fallout 3 on the 360, according to VGChartz, has, overall, sold 800k copies worldwide. That's more than LBP. Fable 2 has sold 1.49m since release. And that's _without_ releasing in Japan.

Speaking of which, LBP's Japanese sales are abysmal. It's doing about as well as Oblivion did, ignoring the fact that the PS3 is a much stronger platform these days than when the 360 was around for the Oblivion release over there.

Seriously, if you're trying to claim LBP is the smash-success it was supposed to be, you're delusional.

GoW2, another FPS people go gaga over.

It also outsold LBP and SOCOM combined. And it's not an FPS, it's a third-person shooter. _Resistance 2_ is an FPS - one which is also getting completely outsold by Gears of War 2.

I love my PS3, but be real: the software sales just aren't there, and LBP was a serious misfire when it comes to holiday blockbusters. Without a price cut, the PS3 _needs_ a game that can shift units - otherwise they're going to lose out on a TON of Christmas sales.
