OC'ing x2 4200 (939) right now, need some help

Im overclocking my CPU for the first time and had one try at it and didnt boot into windows (got BSOD)

My settings were changed from stock to this:

DDR 2.75 2.5-3-3-6 1T 400mhz
CPU Mulitplier x11
CPU Frequency 240
CPU Voltage 1.45
HT multiplier set from auto to 4x

Temps were only 30c but no boot, the stock temps were like 28c before...

Any suggestions?

nah, i have to hook up the floppy drive for that...lol

I assume if it cant boot windows then its a no go anyway. Then ill run a few tests afterwards.

There is a memtest that you run in windows, no floppy needed.

You can...just download the ISO file and burn it as it a disk image.

yes, i will test using memtest off a cd or in windows

now...back to my oc question! Kman79, do you have any other settings in the bios tweaked besides the ones i said? you have the same mobo, so maybe you have tips?

Wouldn't say i have anything tweaked, it really didn't take me long to figure my OC out. First thing I would do is reset the mobo, either take the battery out or do the reverse jumper thing to clear. I would just take the battery out for about half a minute, make sure the power cable is unplug so that the moobo resets.

Start of at CPU @ 220 and go up from there. The CPU I'm sure is good for at least 230 i'm sure. Your giving it enough voltage for it to be stable at 240. My Toledo is getting less than 1.45 and it's stable at 245. Start the CPU off at 220 and slowly start up from there.

I'm thinking its your memory that could be at fault. What's the most voltage that memory can take? My RAM is rated up to 250 (DDR 500), and I ran memtest to make sure. Run memtest to rule out the memory

Try 2T. When I go to 1T with my Valueram, the comp won't even get to post anymore and I need to clear my CMOS.

hmm i read up some more on the memory and i guess its real garbage for overclocking. Most cant get it over 225mhz without errors...

Update:

Just booted to OS with:

ddr at 2.8v
multiplier 11
voltage 1.45
frequency 220

= 2420
temp 33c idle

Now i just need to test to make sure its stable

CPUZ says the voltage is going from 4.88-4.5, is that too high?

Clock speed is king with A64s. I timeset my ram at 166/200 and it runs at 193MHz when I run my CPU at 11x246 for 2.7GHz.

dennilfloss, there's no way you're running your RAM @193 Mhz, with a 166 divider. You must have meant a 133 divider. And supaidaaman, raise your memory timings to 3-4-4-8-1T @ 2.8v vdimm, and your memory won't be your limiting factor for quite awhile.

dennilfloss's 166 divider makes sense to me. 166 divider ~ 5/6 (actually 11/14 for a CPU with an 11x multiplier, confirmed by CPU-z).

I'm not gonna reboot to check the divider in bios for sure but 193MHz is what my RAM is running at right now.

I know it should be running at ~204MHz but my mobo makes it run at 193MHz for some reason.

Looking at your png Everest info, the memory is running at the tighter 2.5-3-3-7 timings, matching the SPD default timings for 166MHz.

Are your memory timings set to AUTO (or SPD) in BIOS? If so, it's using your 166 divider to decide memory timings: if you push your HTT (and hence memory speed) higher, then you may need to relax these timings manually in BIOS (e.g. to 3-4-4-8).

Yup, the memory is by SPD. I may decide to relax the timings or up the Vdimm a little if I encounter instability.

ZoneAlarm decided to update itself and needed a reboot, so I checked the divider and took a pic of the memory clock.

I just looked at your everest screenshot, quick question, how many RAM slots are physically taken up on your board?

I could be wrong here, but that could be your problem. I believe you can run into some insues when running more that two banks of RAM. How many Gigs total RAM are you running? Run in dual channel mode and see if the RAM clocks/runs better. Just load Slot 1 and slot 3 or Slot 2 and Slot 4. All the same model RAM right? Thats just my opinion. Would be nice if you can run the RAM at 245 and run 1:1 Ratio. Keep us posted

i cant seem to get prime95 to run on both cores. Im only getting about 55-80% in cpu usage and one core window is at max while the other isnt....

FYI, I ran into the same problem with my Socket 939 X2 4200+. It won't even boot into Windows at 230x11 w/ 1.45v.

BTW see the stress-testing sticky post in this forum for instructions on using Prime95 to test both cores of an X2 processor.

I made a copy of the P95 folder and have two shorcuts, one to each instance. Each tests one core. That gets you 100& core usage when testing.

I have three GB of RAM but I am stable at 2.7. The OP is the one with a problem.
