i want to oc my cpu but i can get past 2.05 ghz.

here's my setup
AMD athlon 64 3200+ winchester
MSI k8n Neo2 platinum mb
1 gb mushkin dual pack
specs on the memory
- Specifications -

eVGA 6800 Ultra

i am pretty unfamiliar with memory timings and could use a little help with this.

thx a bunch!

jp

ps my hsf is the zalman 7000

I'll tell you what man, my situation was a little different then yours, but hopefully it might help. I could not get past 240 FSB (2400 mhz) on my CPU, so what i did was to lower my multiplier (cpu), and it helped tremendously. I now run at 8x315 (~2.56 ghz). So, i would definitly try to drop the cpu mulitplier. Make sure you set the AGP to 67 to lock it. Check out the OC guide at the top of this forum, it is really helpful. Also make sure your HT mult is set to 4.

thx guys. i'll try it out, and when i clock it up how long should i awit be4 trying to go another step up?

btw my ps is an enermax 430 watt

here's how i have mine set up. agp set to 67. memory in slots 1 and 2. if you are using SATA use ports 3 or 4. cool and quiet disabled. memory set at 2.5-3-3-10 1T 1:1 ratio. FSB set to 250. htt multi set to 4x. vcore and vdimm at stock.

can my memory handle those timings tho?

*edit* i have decided to get new ram,

i'm leanining toward the ocz pc 3200 el platinum rev2.
but i am also lookin at the ocz pc 4200 el platinum.

youre thought anyone?

No, the OCZ he's using will run much tighter timings.

If you memory can get to 250 it would be with something like 3-4-4-10

From what I've read *and this of course is subject to new data/experiences*, the OCZ 3200 rev2 will get you a nicer overclock and will run tighter timings at higher FSB ratings. Take note though that the OCZ rev2 only comes out on top at the very high end of oc'ing. There are other, probably cheaper solutions, if you're not planning to really push the hell out of it.

Just search on Andandtech for the memory review and you'll find what I'm talkng about. It's a really interesting article (quite long) and will tell you a lot about certain brands and how they perform and also may help you understand timings a bit better.

I agree with bmillerd. I have the OCZ platinum rev2 my self, but I would reccomend sticking with the Mushkin value ram that you've got. You should be able to overclock the CPU just as far as any body else using a memory divider and or looser timings. And as bmillerd said the only real advantages of highspeed ram don't start showing up unless you can run 275mhz+ 1T. And timings just aren't that important on the A64. The OCZ at twice the price is just not worth it for the small performance increase it gives. And the 4200 is totally out of the question

i agree also. but that's the ram i got, so thats what i am using. zebo did an interesting post that showed the value ram to perform every bit as well as more expensive except in winrar, i think with the a64 chips. i think if he just loosens his timings a bit he will get a good overclock. the board should be able to handle higher fsb no prob. good luck.

is there a post about loosening timimgs? i've never had to do that b4 and am a bit hesistant.

btw, thx for all of your advice guys, i got it running at 2.2 ghz so far, 220 x 10 (4x htt). my ram timings are set to stock still.

go into BIOS. cell menu, then press enter on DRAM configuration.

1T/2T set to 1T
CAS# Latency set to 3
RAS# to CAS# Delay set to 4
Min RAS# Active Time set to 10
Row Precharge Time set to 4

let us know how it goes.

it's going ok so far, but i changed my dimm around and now i'm running single channel 64bit memory clock? is that right? i was running dual channel with 128 bit mem clock earlier. just want to know.

what slots are your memory in? dual channel usually offers no significant performance gain ( unless using onboard video ) so that shouldn't matter, but i would keep them in slots 1 and 2. how is the overclock progressing?

they are in the slots nearest the cpu. 3,4 i think. still no significant gain. i'm trying but it keeps locking up at windows boot screen.

btw thx for your help DD, i appreciate it.

**edit** i now have her runnin @ 2.4 ghz (10 * 240) ddr clock @ 333mhz. and htt 4x. i want to run higgheer but i lock at the wnidows start up.

thx guys i appreciate the helpful tips and tricks.

**second edit** i run prime95 and come up with a hardware error

"Fatal error: rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
hardware failure detected.
execution halted.

anyone have a clue what this means?

If Prime95 spits out an error it means your system isn't completely stable. You can try giving your processor more voltage and relaxing your memory timings. My A64 3000+ has made it up to just past 2.6ghz with 1.65 volts and temps well under 60C on stock cooling, this isn't to say yours will but most people have seem to been *Fairly* safe at that voltage. Keep in mind the max recommended by AMD is 1.5v. Even if Prime95 does fail, it's more a matter of personal preferance whether or not you want to run that OC. A system can run for months without crashing and then get errors in Prime95 in mere seconds. If Prime95 does show errors, eventually your computer will crash, whether or not you want to accept this risk with the benefit of a higher overclock is up to you.

I just order a winchester 3500 oem with a thermalright xp90, i got the ocz vx gold pc3200 2 512s this is the one capable of 3.2 volts. It will also be on a msi neo II platinum. This will be my first time overclocking. I have read many guides and think I have got it down. Any pointers as to wher to start? What do i need to the agp setting to stop it from overclocking. It is all going to be powered by a ocz modstream 450 watt power supply. Any advice would be great.

i brouht my oc down a little and ran prime95 for a good 18 hours now. looks pretty stable. thx a bunch folks.

amd athlon64 3200+ winchester running 10 x 235 w/ 4x htt. 1.525v
1 gb pc3200 mushkin dual ram (value i believe) 3 4 4 10 1T 2.6v

i'll try pushing a little more by relaxing the timings a little bit more. any suggestions?

**i tightened my timings some to 3 3 3 8 1T

i want to see if i can tighten them some more. what would i tighten to next? any suggestions?
