Hi ppls,

My signiture says my specs. Now i have started ocing this chip and I just want to ask, is it really this damn easy?
I now have a stable OC: 3.6Ghz
RAM: 1066MHz. (Voltage still on auto)
FSB: 400MHz. (Voltage of chip still at 1.2V)

Really i only set the fsb from 333 to 400 and it just... well, accepts.

I assume you have error checking turned on in Prime95? If not it won't alert you when the CPU makes a mistake, and thus you have no idea whether or not your overclock is unstable.

I guess so... My sig shows my previous system -- it actually took me WEEKS to get it stable on that DFI board. I must have spent nearly three days just getting all of the memory sub-settings dialed in. Then there were the countless freezes in Prime95. In the end, I got a decent OC, but, man, was I busy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but there were times it got a bit tedious -- especially going into my office in the mornings after it had been Primeing overnight just to see the entire system had hung...

But this E8400 took nothing to get to 3.6 beyond making the FSB change in BIOS. My temps are ridiculously low at both idle and load and I haven't had to make any changes in voltages, either. I have already run OCCT for two hours, Super Pi, and I ran Orthos for 23 hours.

I have read about lots of others who have had it this easy, so I guess we aren't really lucky -- it's just the way it goes with these E8400s. Now we'll have to see if it will go a bit higher. I don't think there is any advantage to running all the time at 4.0, but I wouldn't mind at 3.8 if temps stay reasonable.

I hope so! Where do I make sure?

Well I think im pretty happy with 3.6GHz. Hell, I could only see the difference in two games. SupCom and Crysis, which are run at full gfx. Crysis is on Ultra High.
3GHz is still quite a speed as well.

Now can you do it while you chew bubble gum and rub your belly at the same time?

Overclocking is easy, it's making it stable that's not (unless you're lucky and you hit the right spot from the start).

Intel makes it easy to OC...now working with a AMD chip on a DFI board...well that's something else.

I wish that would of worked for me.
I upped fsb 400
boots and such but fails OCCT
Had to set to 1.262 mit
1.236 in bios
1.216-1.232 cpuz
1.22-1.23 everest

Does this look ok?

At 500x8 4.0 GHZ my rig takes 1.375 vcore in bios.It runs 12+ hours of Prime 95 and the
load temps barely hit 60 if at all. I run on air and it runs 24/7

you don't know the right spot unless you test your limits.

I run Prime95 for > 6 h. Max core temp was 49C with EK wc, 3xrad. Is it enough or shell I live it for longer period of time to run?
My second question is related to Baba question. I'm starter and I did read some topics about oc on this forum and articles on AnandTech site. I just bump FSB to 450, multiplier on 9, DRAM default for Dominator plus 1T and tRD 6, but I didn't fill easy with changing V to Proc, Memo, FSB, NB and SB, so I left all V on auto and pray for the best. I saw in HWMonitor and BIOS that Proc V is 1,295. After first 6h + on Prime95, it runs great on XP, for a week now. My concern is related to one topic where they say that BIOS always give bigger values then needed when V is left on auto, but isn't 1,295 already low for E8400 4050 MHz? So, should I go and play with V or live it as it is?

Regards

I havent overclocked in years, decade? My last overclock was a celeron 300A@450. I may have to give my E8400 that arrives today a spin at 3.6Ghz. I am too pussy to try higher hehe.

One question, how much does power consumption increase with an overclock like this (going from 3.0GHz to 3.6 GHz)?

Zapper just checking why you run at the 8 mult? Can't you get to 4ghz at 9? Or you think you get better scores at 500?
:)

" I am still wondering where to make sure error testing is on? "

In Prime95, Advanced, check - Round off checking.
