Oh, and a followup...

The reason I was looking at this thread is because I have just built our second home-made PC. Actually, my son and I did. This one has the EPOX 8RDA+, ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, Thermaltake 800, Antec SmartPower 350W, AMD 1700+ (B), and while it has a Crucial 512M 2100DDR in it right now, I finally found my two new 256M Samsung 2700DDR chips and will install them once I get it stable.

Had a lot of problems after it was already running when I tried to install the WinFast 2000XP card. It didn't install right, couldn't uninstall, etc. Finally, after I downloaded and tried to install the new drivers from EPOX this week, the whole thing crashed. Right now, I just reformatted the hard drive and am most of the way through reinstalling Windows XP Pro, etc. This has two hard drives - both Maxtor - first is 80G 8M cache and the other is 120G 2m cache.

As I said, once I get done getting most all installed, updated and stable, then I will change or add the two Samsung 2700DDR chips and try my first hand at tweaking/overclocking. That is when you all will hear from me more as I begin to pull out more hair that I cannot afford to lose!

However, now I read that EPOX has a newer BIOS and ATI has new drivers for the 9500 Pro.....

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the.....

If you have a locked palomino, you might not get such great results from overclocking it.
Since it's a Palomino, I would try 1Mhz fsb overclocks until the machine either locks up, or if it goes to Windows and
you can run a benchmark but it freezes or causes corruption errors. Then bump up the voltage a bit, try the smallest bumps, like 0.025V if possible and
try doing the same benchmark again at the same fsb. If that works, try adding more fsb, then more voltage, but try not to add too much voltage, ie. try not to go over 1.8-1.85Volts
on your first overclock.

If bumping up your voltage by 0.2Volts only gives you an extra 1-2Mhz fsb out of your overclock, I would set it back down cause it's just not worth it.
Make sure that you have good ram, ie. something that can push your fsb up high as you are trying to overclock, even though PC2100 is probably all you will need with a locked Palomino.

I'm sorry to say, but on air and using a locked Palomino you may not even be able to get an extra 10Mhz fsb out of your cpu (ie. around 143fsb), but if you use a SLK800 and PC2700 ram, you might get a 15Mhz-20Mhz overclock(ie. 148Mhz-153Mhz fsb x 11.5 = 1702Mhz-1760Mhz) but it's really a waste on a good mobo and an SLK800 to use a Pally when you could get a cheap 1700+ TBred B and go past that at less voltage and heat.

I have a 1900+ Palomino that I got to 152fsb using PC2100 Crucial, but I got alot of instability and eventually put it back down cause benches were giving less score as well as voltage was getting pretty high on cpu and ram. I just leave it at stock now cause of the heat or I bump it up to 2000+/2100+ speeds (ie. 138-143mhz fsb).

My next build is going to be a 2500+ with either a new revision 8rda+, NF7-S, or A7N8x deluxe, a stick of Corsair PC3200C2, and a SLK900U with a 92mm Enermax fan.
Anything above 2.1Ghz is gravy to me then. This is hopefully going to be a fairly quiet, fast, and very affordable system.

I got a new processor 1700+ Tbred B.. I'm still fuzzy on the order of installation of drivers tho didn't get to superly o/c it yet. Is it first SP1 for win xP then mobo drivers then dx9 then video drivers and whatever other drivers i need for the parts i have then windows update?
