I have a MSI K7T Turbo vers3 and just updated to Award Bios 6.1

i bought a XP 1800+ (Palomino) but it arrived DOA,..So Im sending it back,..In the meantime,...

How fast can I achieve if I overclock my Duron 600 by using the multiplier (newbie) to 1.70 or 1.75v if I unlock it and still using the 100 FSB my old 1.1 Award Bios had or new Award 6.1 may still be set at? Ive read the Duron can withstand only to 1.7v, but to expect any OC'ing, I should bump Voltage to 1.75,....

I havent checked my newly updated BIOS yet if I can change my FSB to 133 cause my previous BIOS only went to 132 and I upgraded my BIOS so I could use the XP 1800+,....And if I can run at a 133FSB, at what voltage should i drop down to?? 1.5, 1.575???

thanks
Kevin

Probably between 850 and 950 MHz.

My Duron 750 got just over 900 MHz stable, and that seemed to be typical of the core. A friend is still running his Duron 750 at just under 900 MHz.
Should be able to handle in the range of 1.7-1.8v with decent cooling.

I gave the chip to someone else with a newer motherboard. I gave them the system with it running 6.5x138MHz (~900MHz), so lowering the multiplier and increasing the bus speed is no problem, provided you have a motherboard that can do that. Motherboards of the same vintage as the Spitfire core were NOT capable of 133MHz FSB regardless what options were available in the BIOS.

Can you change the FSB on a MSI K7T Turbo version 3 to utilize a 133 FSB?? I know it runs currently a 100 FSB right??

Ive already updated to Award Bios v6.00PG and am using the W6330VMS or version 3.6 Bios update,...

In the Bios, Vcore voltage is adjustable up to a max of 1.7v (thought you needed at max 1.75v to OC Duron 600??) and BIOS has an adjustment for FSB (I think) that can be changed between 100 to 132.

Im confused whether I can just "drop in" an XP 1800+ into my mobo or not,..Will the BIOS make its own adjustment/changes or do I need to do anything,..According to MSI's website and AMD, my mobo "can" use a XP 1800+ as long as its a Palomino core and am using the latest BIOS,..

Help,..Im confused and Im getting my XP from the mainland already,...

That mobo supports 133MHz FSB. 1.7v should get you some good headroom given the Duron is 1.6v stock. 1.75 really didn't get me much higher at all than 1.7v.

There is likely a jumper to go from 100 MHz FSB to 133 MHz FSB. Swapping the jumper will allow 133+MHz to be selectable in the BIOS. Then you'll no longer be able to select the lower range (100-132)

You should be able to drop in and XP. Clear the bios first to be sure, but even that shouldn't really be unnecessary provided you set the FSB low enough and/or set everything back to auto before you swap.

one day when i was bored, i oc'd my mom's old duron 650 on an a7v333. i found a nice little way (on accident) to set vcore to 2.3 volts. it scared me at first, but then i had a nice :D on my face and looked at how well it oc'd. interesting results (i didnt do any stability tests, i was testing with no hard drive, no floppy, no cd, just video, mobo, cpu, heatsink, ram, and psu) it worked at 10.5*100, but only 5*166, and 7*133. try to find the best speed/performance ratio (fsb plays a LARGE role in those ranges) by running superpi and 3dmark. both will test stablity as well. be sure to use mbm5 to check temps. fyi: mine was unlocked from stock, with 1.5v vcore

I have a bud who still runs a Duron600@1ghz on 2.1v and he has had that spitfire since shortly after it debuted=diehard tough CPUs. As long as you have the cooling you can abuse that thing to your 's content.

i know what you mean, those old buggers are tough. i've sat on, spilled water on, dropped, bent pins on, chipped die, used with no heatsink, etc. you name it, i did it to that poor little cpu. it worked at 1.1 volts and it worked at over double that. It never gave me crap (mobos are an entirely different thing) and just kept running. dammn, if those were made with heatspreaders, those things would be invincible

I had a Duron 600 that does 900MHZ using 6x150FSB.

I want to hit the magical 1000mhz mark, but my ECS K7S5A PRO
have a MAXIMUM FSB of 150fsb. The 166/200 will hang.

I just changed my case to an Enermax 3188 case with the bubbly tubes on the front that changes colors and the blue light inside the case,...It has helped cool my CPU and case a lot better,..CPU temps dropped from 49-51 Deg C to 45 deg C under load,...Big difference since my old case is like 6 yrs old,..

I got news from MSI on my motherboard,..the manual had nothing about the jumper (J17) to change from 100FSB to 144FSB,..glad MSI replied back to me,...

Do I need to change the multiplier to 1.7v and mod my Duron, or can I just run the 133 FSB and lower the clock speed down to 5 (133X5 = 655mhz)?? Im just considering since my Duron is about 6yrs old now and I still need it till I get my XP next week,...I would get better use out of my 133DIMM memory right??

Also,..Is it necessary to clear the BIOS or load "stock" settings before/when I swap in my XP 1800+, or can I just drop it in after I pull the jumper for 133FSB and hope for any differences??

thanks
Kevin the NEWBIE,..

so the only thing u did was bump the fsb to 150mhz? u didnt have to do the wire mod?

you coudlnt change the multiplier?

those old durons were either unlocked, or very easy to unlock (pencil trick) compared to unlocking CPU's nowadays. (though some boards will unlock the CPU for you anwyay if you are lucky.)

i dont think the k7s5a pro has a multiplier option..just fsb?

I took out jumper 17 on my mobo thanks to a quick reply from MSI (info wasnt in my manual) so that i had access to 133FSB.

With a 133FSB, my Duron 600 was clocking at 800mhz and was running a lot faster previous to the change at 600mhz at 100FSB,..few minutes later my computer freezes,...had to reboot,..Put jumper back in and lowered FSB to 116,..freezes again or responds very slowly,..So I put back to 100FSB before I screw things up,..works normal again,.but I miss the speed,..

Question as Im a newbie and not yet clear to AmandTech's overclocking FAQ is,..
Can I make changes to the FSB (to either more than 100 or at 133FSB) without unlocking the Duron with the conductive ink trick? I am going to unlock it to 1.7volts for Vcore voltage if I need to, but will my Duron work with any changes to FSB without unlocking it first??,..

Just needed the clarification as I loved the speed at 133FSB,..

Heh, I remember my first overclock was a duron 600.

My 600 easily reached 1000 with 1.75 volts, and it stayed that way for 2years. I put it back in a few months ago just to play around with it, and I think it hit 1100, not perfectly stable, wouldn't run p95, but this was on a nf7-s. Good luck.

Processors that old didn't even need conductive ink to unlock, just draw in the lines with a pencil.

Was your voltage still stock at 800 MHz? Should be rare to not be able to reach 800 MHz. You need to unlock it to isolate CPU and MB by trying 100x8.

So,..

If I unlock it with pencil or ink to 1.7 volts,..will the CPU overclock itself or do I still need to tool around with either a 7 or 8 clock speed in the BIOS and see if it'll reach that speed?? Or can I leave it at a 6 clock speed and see if it'll work with a faster FSB than 100???

My Duron hit 800mhz without me unlocking it, but it did freeze up on me,..

If you're able to get into windows and do some stuff before it locking up on you, you're pretty close to stability. 0.1 to 0.15 v should get you there without having to change the multiplier, just running 6x133.

But the K7T turbo should be able to change voltage in BIOS regardless of whether or not you pencil anything on the chip. Should be in the BIOS menu for "CPU Frequency/Voltage Control"
The option for changing CPU voltage is "CPU Vcore Select" Just change that so that you get 0.1 to 0.15 volts higher, then try with J17 again.

Ok,..

I just did this and will see how stable things will be or if my computer will lock up again,..Id didnt use the pencil or ink trick on my CPU and made adjustments with the jumper and thru BIOS.

I was able to adjust the Vcore voltage to 1.7 in the BIOS, but when I run PC Alert III in windows that checks the condition of my fan speeds, CPU, and various voltages, it says that the Vcore voltage is at 1.8 and not the 1.7 voltage that I set in the BIOS,..Which do I believe?? Im running 6x133FSB for 800mhz right now,...

Also, the Core temperature rose about 5 degrees and is running 54 deg C just using the web,..was at 47 degrees previously,...a little warmer but I do have a CoolerMaster Vortex Dream 7 to put on it if I need to,..I was waiting for my XP 1800+ to put this HS and fan on,...

BTW,..how long should I wait for drying after applying Silver arctic 5 before installing HS and fan? Can I do this when its still wet or wait?
