OC'ing an E4300

I'm gonna pull an E4300 from a Dell here fairly soon, replace it with an E6600 or whatever, and I'd like to keep the E4300 for myself.

I also picked up some Corsair memory...
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85016-16

I have a Gigabyte S3 laying around from a system a customer returned, but I am quite sure it is an older revision, and if I don't use it, I don't really know what else to do with it. I'd really hate to rebuild my system with it, then end up replacing it and rebuilding the system, again.

So, I am not totally against getting a different board. I am totally new to OC'ing, but my goal is to get this E4300 up to 2.4Ghz or maybe a little more if possible. Is this too much to ask for? Even with stock cpu HSF? If not, what board would you recommend, or should I consider using the older revision S3 I already have?

I'm currently running a Pentium 930 and a 7900 GT. I'll have to wait before I upgrade the video, but there really is not a need to do so at the moment anyway.

Oh, and my PSU is an Antec SP 2.0 500W.

U should be able to hit 2.4 ghz with that e4300 on the S3 board maybe even more try it for yourself and see :) The S3 board i heard is preetty good overclocker... close to the Ds3

The worst u can replace the stock HSF with the Cooler Freezer 7 Pro for 30$ shipped from Ewiz

yes, but without a diff HS it will overheat.

I am using stock cooling for the HS/fan with a DS3 and right now, I'm at 2.4

I could probably go a little higher as I idle at 38-39 and load around 58.

If I can hit ~2.4Ghz using the stock HSF, I'll stop there. I figure at that speed, my gpu is the bottleneck, and I don't really do anything more demanding than gaming on this system.

So, the ram is ok to get that kind of speed? What about the older revision of the S3 I already have? It is most likely the first revision. BIOS updates enough?

X6800 runs at 2.93 ghz and does not overheat....

If you don't up the voltage past stock the cpu should not overheat.

If you are shooting for only 2.4 ghz I would bsel mod the cpu with a defogger kit and toothpick. Makes your cpu use the 1066 fsb/strap. You basically just made a poor mans e6600.

Mild OC = 266FSB 2.4GHz (99% success rate IMO ;) )
Moderate OC = 333FSB 3GHz (realistic aim for stock cooling)
Hardcore OC = 400FSB 3.6GHz and above (high end air or better only)

Gigabyte 965P-DS3 version 2.0
E4300
Transcend DDR2-800

all from newegg.com, just put it together today.

3.1ghz on stock cooling, temps are fine, prime stable.

You'll be able to do 3.0 Ghz without overclocking that RAM. And that motherboard is fine, although you'll want to use your Pentium 930 to update the BIOS with, since you already have it, and the original BIOS supports it.

I see. Good idea. Will I need a floppy to update the BIOS? I may need to get one.

What are your temps with stock cooling at idle and load?

I have the DS3, but unless it is really different, I flashed my BIOS with a USB drive. They also have a windows client I believe...but I still would rather use the USB to do it.

if you got an e4300 you will not hit 3ghz on that board. the fsb limitation is around 297mhz or so. i have an e4300 and i cannot get above 297 with it being stable. check out the lengthy thread in the motherboards section to see what i am talking about.

i have my e4300 at 2.7 on my ds3 with stock heatsink. I idle at 20 and load gets to 45-50. Havent changed the vcore yet so i dont really have to worry about a new heatsink (and my 900 case does a good job too :D)

you don't know about the 333x9 1.4v volt mod ? :p

--a little conductive ink ;)

:)

ANYWAY ... i would be satisfied with the highest stock vcore setting (296x9 - 2.66ghz)

. . . i "aim" high

damn UPS just interrupted my lunch :|

OH ... all my packages from NewEgg are here

How do you get that deal at newegg?

I need to get a tax certificate, and get it online with NewEgg so I can start using them more.

i don't think it has anything to do with being a reseller or tax certificates

Apply for NewEggs city bank CC ... every purchase on it gets 1.1% discount ... and free 'rush shipping' ... e.g. i ordered Wed night ... have it today, Friday !

i just need to sell my older HW before the bill accrues interest - minimum of 20 days - that is the 'trick' to using their credit.

Oh I see, thanks. They have a distribution center, or two (my last order of dvd burners ship out of Memphis, where I live), in TN, so I have to pay sales tax with them. I usually shop elsewhere because of that, ZZF, eWiz, Outpost, etc. But ZZF and EWiz are in CA, so items take forever to get here via Ground shipping. Outpost is very fast though, they have a distribution center in OH, and I get stuff from them in 2-3 days max. But their good deals are limited to hard drives and memory usually. They never have good/decent deals on high-end video cards, which has been my trouble spot lately.

Doing what I do, I spend a lot of money on hardware. Over $150K from ZZF in the past 3 years alone.

well i just got it today - open box MB - no manual ....

and put it all together ... works ... windows set up fine

BUT i don't even know 'how' to get into the ASrock's BIOS
[no manual, no set-up anything ... but great for $25]
[it's limping along at 1.7G ... still faster than my P4 EE] :p

give me a little time ... and i need to check out the volt mod links before i pass on incorrect info to anyone

Update ... i picked 2.4G ... no idea why

runs fine

back later
