Haha, does anyone know what the limits of the ancient Geforce4 MX420 with 64mb memory is? I'm trying to OC it (to somehow play 3d games without skipping too much) but i'm afraid to melt the card or something (no fan. or cooler.) I don't really feel like spending money, so don't suggest buying a vid cooler.

sorry, but there isn't anything you can do. It isn't the clock speed holding you back, rather the arcitecture of the card and core itself. The support for the newest games isn't there either. Basicly, all you will do by overclocking is make it hotter with no proformance increase.

I realize that performance sucks, and I can deal with it. what i can't deal with, however, is occasional skipping playing halo pc (all graphics turned down to low, decals yes, resolution 800x600) and its messing me up. I think i notice a decrease in the skipping when i OC it a bit, but i don't want to push the card too far.

Well if the background is messed you are way to far. Normal artifacts you would see from an overclock would be due to overheating and would be weird checkerboard effect, colors or other glitches while playing a 3d game. Lockups could also occur. But if you wanna oc your card without a cooler you are just asking to fry it, and if you insist on trying go really slow and run a bunch of benchmarks making sure there are no problems before clocking it up each time.

Give it a try, just go up slowly and check for artifacts. my 5900xt (390 x700 works fine at 475x950). Try Nvidia coolbits reg hack and hit detect optimal frequecy in the clock frequecy section after you apply the hack.

I have mx420, and I have OCed it pretty far, its not powerful enough to damage itself I think, cause I have gone too far, and saw TONS of artificacts, just push it til you cant go farther, dont worry about hurting the card.
