OCing a 2.4C...how far can i go?

so i was reading online, and i came across that 2.4C was the one (if not the) of the highest CPUs that can overclock. people have even posted their benchmarks and pics of setups - most were over 3.2! one was at 4.3 and thats sick.

so im already running at 2.9, and i cant go to 3.00 for some reason.

ASUS P4P800 mobo
Intel Pentium 4 2.4C @ 2.9Ghz currently
stock heatsink, 2 coolermaster blue LED fans, 1 antec case fan
Antec Smartpower 300 watt PSU
Antec Performance SX635 II case
pioneer slot load DVDrom
lite-on 52x24x32 cd burner
geforce 2 MX 32MB (im part of the leadtek 6600GT $140 deal on the hot deals forum, dont worry)
GEIL PC4000 RAM 2x256 (comes with a cooler gel - dont know what to do with it)
120GB western digital special edition HD
160GB seagate 7200RPM HD

i forgot what the thing is called in the bios (my revision is 1016 btw) to clock the speed higher, but its at 242...ive seen people go beyond 250+ with PC3200 ram, can mine do that too?

any special things i have to do in the bios, or any parts i need to upgrade? (video card should be on its damn way, stupid xpcgear.com)

thanks.

EDIT: pic up now (hope it works) - http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/s...tenjager/untitled.jpeg

Buy yourself a Thermaltake XP-120 and a tube of Arctic Silver 5... try doing 3.0GHz 1:1 ratio, add a little to the vcore.

I know my 2.4C will make 3Ghz with both the stock cooler and the ThermalTake copper block on it now. Memory doesn't like to run at 250 though, and I get better performance with it at 200 and 1:1 rather than 250 5:4.

I'll likely pick up some good DDR500 in January and take my chip to 3Ghz.

i used 3:2 divider with my 2.4c @ 3.6 300fsb effectively running 400mhz ddr with 2-2-2-5

with my current rig im using 5:4 divider here is a screenshot of bandwidth and super pi benchmark

Hah, hahahaha! Good old ASUS Probe (in the corner). It never lets us down: always reporting 38-40C, no matter the chip, temperature, architecture, etc.

What does the BIOS tell you, or MBM5?

Your PC4000 RAM is rated for 250 FSB so it'll do 250 no problem as long as your motherboard and CPU are up to it. Get a better cooler for your CPU and also get some Artic Silver 5 and it'll help keep the temps down.

Uually a 2.4 should do 3.1~3.2 with no vcore adjustments. I would recommend getting some PC-4400 memory or Samsung tccd chips. Intel runs best at 1:1. Also you need to lose the retail cooling, the XP-90 or 120 are great choices.

okies, ill upload a pic of speedfan, CPU-Z, and WCPU in a bit...i uped the voltages a bit, and it runs stable on 3.00Ghz now. how do i change these "ram timings?" ive googled it, and people said they have on P4P800 deluxe and regular mobos, but i cant find that option anywhere!

ASUS lists them a little differently. There should be a setting in your BIOS saying "DRAM frequency" and 3 different frequencies. Each of these are different memory dividers.

The ratio is under DRAM Frequency 400=1:1, 333=5:4, 266=3:2. What kind of cooling are you using and what vcore are you using now?

oh okay, thanks guys....um, stock heatsink, 2 coolermaster blue LED fans (80mm), and 1 antec fan.

vcore is 1.65.

EDIT: that pic at the first post of mine randomly shows different vcores, but its really 1.65 in the bios.

only thing else i see that may be a problem for u is because ur o/c'n and it sux more juice your ...

"Antec Smartpower 300 watt PSU"

may not have an adiquate 12v rail i would sudgest upgrading to atleast a 400 to 500 watt PSU.

just my 2 cents 🙂

Only issue (not really) is - I can't change the memory settings. Any changes thru BIOS, and I get continuous reboot....Other than that.....I LOVE THIS BOARD!!!😀

yes, i would look into a new power supply if you are getting a 6600GT. not too much of a powerhog, but a smartpower 300w might have some trouble. look into a truepower 380w or 430w. im running my rig on a 430w, and its been great.
