OCing 1200Mhz Athlon - whats a good temp?

While I was OCing my wife's computer (700Mhz Duron currently at 904Mhz) I decided to go ahead and OC mine also - it is a 1200Mhz Athlon running on an Abit KT7A mobo. What is a good temp for this proc to run at? It was running at appx 50 deg. celcius, I bumped it a bit to 1266Mhz and now its at 59 deg under load. Is this high for an Athlon or about average? If its high, I now have some Artic Silver I got for my wife CPU that I can put on under the fan (it is a generic fan came with the retail AMD proc.) Also, should I look far a better fan? I had heard the fan AMD included weren't the best.

PS. In addition to SI Sandra I am using Prime 95 to stress test - no glitches as of yet.

same set up had my 1.2 o/c to 1.45 at 45c load what heatsink fan are you using? any case fans?

There is no standard answer to this question

It all depends on room temperature etc etc.

Motherboard sensors all vary in accuracy too.

If the 59C is actually accurate then it is still within the acceptable limits of the CPU - 90C being the limit at which it will shut down.

You could try a better fan - but if you make your room temperature lower you will see an even bigger drop in temps

Just ensure you have adequate ventilation and air flow for your case.

I'm in Florida and my Duron 1000 @ 1200 was running at 56/57C (42C idle) after gaming etc. Now that the ambient temperatures have dropped I've seen it as low as 38C (28/29 idle). But in the 40's is more realistic.

If you are running in the 50's I wouldn't worry about it at all.

For me that's way too high regardless of conditions. Those t-birds were some of the hottest proc's ever created, and IMHO you just cannot o/c with a retail HSF.

Good lord how cold did it get there? That's quite a drop in temps.

I'd say try and keep it below 60C just to prolong the life of your athlon. IMHO

It was down to somewhere around 46F last week - supposedly going to be colder tomorrow onwards also...

I have re-formatted and not re-installed MBM so no idea about my temps right now - it's really only a psychological thing (seeing the temps - which are probably inaccurate) as I WILL be running my CPU at 1200Mhz until I get a new one or it dies

Further to the temperature issue and your CPU - so long as you are not having stability problems with your system I would not be concerned in the least. How long are you really going to keep that CPU?

I'm sure it won't be 5 years or more. Even if you did it would only be worth a few bucks.

Cooler is better - no arguement in that though
