Hi, I have a ABIT BE6 motherboard, Pentium3 700e

running fine at 140fsb. 980mhz

one day, i tried to use 150fsb @ 1050mhz. running fine with applications. but when i run 3dmark02, it crashed(blue screen) during the 5th or 6th test)

and then shutdown.

now the problem begins.... i can't turn on the computer right away. need to go to the case and switch it to off(back) and then unplug the power cable and wait for 10 to 15 minutes then it will start again.

i go back to the bios. need to do a "user define" setup to run at 100fsb @700 mhz, running fine again. at 1.65v(default)

now i try 133fsb. when i restart from bios... it will not boot up. will not go to windows. and automatically shutdown. then i need to unplug the power cable again.

Now.. my CPU can't be oc anymore... does it mean it already burnt? or did i make a severe damage to it and the cpu is about to die?

put more details..
i'm assuming you have win98 because you mentioned BSOD, but winxp could ahve that too.
I tried messing with the frequency dips on this PIII 800EB yesterday, trying to get it to 1ghz (from the board) and it would hang on WinXP boot-in screen.. just desktop and no icons.
So I put the frequency settings on the board according ot my processor correctly, and overclocked it from the bios (now it's at 140fsb, so 840 mhz).

I reformatted and installed windows again. At first I thought it had died too, but when I stuck it on an Intel D815EPFV board, it booted up so I guess it was fine..

what is BSOD?

Do u mean reinstalling WinXP will help?

I don't want to re-install it though.

BSOD is short for blue screen of death

personally, i don't know for sure how one could tell that the CPU gets a death from OC.
The only way I could make sure it wasn't dead, was to put it in another board that I know had no problems, and see if it boots up. If it does, then you're still fine.

Do you remember the reason why you got a blue screen? Did you write down the address, or can you still get it? If you can, post it, because you can search those addresses on google for the problem. Address as in 0x0000008E for example, which is usually a memory problem, but could be a few others too.

I only reformatted and re-installed because I was left with no other choice to do after hours of trying to fix the problem..

Make sure that you only do this if you have no other alternative. If you need to get your system working asap, then format is my suggestion, and re-install windows. Maybe you can copy the contents on the HD you have now onto another one, so you wouldn't lose certain files. At first I used Dolly but it was no good and didn't work. So to copy things onto the other drive, I used LFN (DOS Long FileName Support) and then just proceeded to use those commands to back up what I needed to be saved onto my other HD.

i can still use the cpu.

it still boots up. but i can no longer achieve that clock speed, 933 or beyond that.

the cpu will run at default clock, 700mhz.

now i have another question... when changing the voltage.. how can i tell if it is right for the cpu. the default is 1.65v. when i set it @933, i use 1.75v but don't know if it is right/comfort for the cpu.

how's your cooling?
I would suggest that you remove the cpu and heatsink and re-apply artic silver 3 and clean off the dust if there's any buildup.
Running the cpu at 1.75v should be fine, try not to overvolt beyond 15% b/c it may shorten the lifespan of the cpu.

I have the Golden Orb Heatsink. the big big one...
don't know if it is efficient.. but according to the size, i think it may help.

once i put it on. i can merely take out the motherboard.

the "artic silver 3" u talked about, is it like a better "Heat sink compound" that i can purchase in Radio Shack?

is the artic silver 3 "silicone base?

I bought a stick of Heat sink compound from radio shack. how does it compare to the artic silver 3?

or first of all, they are totally different thing.

make sure the BIOS setting Hold on Speed Error is off

when a CPU resets the system sometimes the BIOS sets that and then it won't work unless at default sometimes.
