I wonder if people realize how much the deficit would go down on its own if we were able to return to a more normal economic picture. A small portion of Americans has benefited enormously from America's economic expansion over the last 30 years, and they have done so far in excess of any possible role they had in creating that wealth. The epic freakout about the wish to return taxes to a level lower than those under Ronald Reagan would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

There's an old saying: 'Power is never given, it's always taken'.

These protests are how democracy - largely - is supposed to work, unfortunately.

You don't have to go in the streets to fight slavery - some issues get settled. But it was won in violence and protest.

Nearly every bit of progress has been a fight.

Women's suffrage, labor rights, gay rights, civil rights, and many more issues all have their roots in the people fighting for them, not in 'enlightened Congress passing them'.

Our very country's founding came not from England listening to the colonists and correcting their wrongs.

A problem is that 'the people' haven't been organized in any fights in decades, since Vietnam.

And without that, the corrupt interests have taken, and taken, and taken, and taken, until you see these absurd charts how they have raped the middle class of wealth.

I've been wrong on some things. One of those was that 'what we need is for people to go in the streets and protest, but that just seems impractical. People won't do it.'

It left me feeling the only mechanism left to the people was the internet. I'm glad to see I was partly wrong, with these protests.

Partly, because the vast majority of people who support these issue can't practically go to the protests. A very small percent will have to represent them.

It's unclear how long they'll go on or the practical result.

But it's still a great thing.

This is democracy, when the people communicate, rather than have the well funded propaganda industry keep them watching Jersey Shore and misled politically.

It shouldn't be needed, but this is how it works - power is not given, it is taken.

The top 1% have taken it. Now it's time for the people to take it back.

So far they have had a great success in changing the national political debate to be about the issues of the 1% and their grabbing of wealth, and corruption.

The upper class has not yet begun to fight this movement - it'll get a lot more difficult before any good comes of it. But that's what people have to do.

Build a national consensus for reform, or let the top 1% win the war and destroy America's middle class and democracy.

If there are only 50,000 jobs for English Majors to go into teaching and 250,000 people get that degree in a given year, guess what - time to compete! Unless you are a leftist, of course, in which case we need to 'create' 200,000 jobs for English majors in government...

What you want/like and what economic reality is willing to hire you to do may not be in alignment. This is reality of supply and demand, even in the labor force... if you choose to pay $25k-$75k for school to get a degree for which there is no market demand why is that the public's job to fix? First life lesson for the post grad, be smarter with your money!

Recent college grads are some of the worst candidates I've ever had to interview. I've actually started moving them to the bottom of the pile vs. folks applying with military experience or work experience in the field and no degree... Luckily there are one or two out there who actually worked their way through college and picked up some useful industry experience in the process. The majority... not so much. At least they have something to do with the like minded moochers out there occupying Wall Street these days.

Ha, yeah to to exact, Obama wanna increase tax on those making $250k+, which is about the top 1.5%. But 98.5% vs 1.5% isn't as catchy or sound as nice as 99% vs 1%. You know Obama and his Hope and Change, he gotta have a catchy simple line so his disciples can follow.

If you have decent degree, good experience and career track, making $250k in a dual income family isn't atypical. I have my ms engineering and MBA with 10+ years consulting experience and my wife top 5 MBA with 10+ experience in corporate finance easily make that. Most our friends with dual income and similar background, easily make that. My engineering friends living in Silicon Valley, dual income easily make that. None of us do any lobbying, or do anything special other than going to work, come home to our family like the rest of American.

You know how it is, those fvcking politicians run the country to the ground and they gotta find someone to blame. They gotta have their catchy phrase to get their mob to follow. Now Obama got his mob with no idea exactly what they are doing, no agenda, no plan, just bunch of finger pointing at the easy picking 1%.

rchiu has a point that extends beyond the taxation issue. I'm generally concerned about the concentration of wealth but there is absolutely no need to demonize the 1% or even the 0.1%. There need to be changes in the system but the overwhelming majority of these people have done nothing wrong. The only reason to attack them personally is to still up votes and further divide the country.
