Ok..i am "about" to get

dfi X38LT

quad Q6600 + ultra 120

4gb mem

So..i heard that dfi UT P35 and in general Q6600 overclocking rules apply, so for this people with P35 and Q6600 can help me too with advice

I am planning to hit 3.6ghz++ with this config....but i am really confused (coming from A64 :) ) what memory i need:

a) for dual channel i can only use 2x2gb sticks and not 4x1gb, right?

So...with the Q6600 i can go 9 x 41x++ FSB
or 8 x 46x FSB

b) what kind of ram do need ? PC6400, PC 8000, PC8500....my head spins..DDR 800, DDR1066...

If i want to go with a standard Q6600 OC, say 9x400..what memory ? What is good with some headroom to try some decent-good overclocking?

cheers,
G.

ed: do i get into trouble going for 4GB ? (on hardware/overclocking/latency side ?)

ed2: I dont want "the cheapest" solution but also not "price doesnt matter".....just some memory which has enough room to make it possible to hit 3600-3800 without the memory being the limiting factor

Wrong, with 4X1GB stick you can still use dual channel just fine. The only difference is basically with 4 sticks its harder to break 500+FSB compared to 2 sticks.
I have no idea what your trying to get at with the second part of that but you can get 500FSB with either.

For 9X 400 (3.6Ghz) you only need DDR2-800. Having the 400FSB & DDR2-800 gives you a 1:1 ratio. If you want to do say 500 or higher I'd go with DDR2-1066. but to use the high multipliers and fsb you would probably need watercooling at that point.

thanks!

Say i want to try 9x445 == 4ghz..assuming i could hit that on air:

Can i still use some good brand DDR2-800 or should i go for DDR-2 1066 ? Would increased latency of 1066 ram be negative? Would 1066 ram always be better because of the headroom i have for FSB...or would it NOT be better because of the increased latency?

It's very unlikely you will get anywhere near 4Ghz with the Q6600 on air. 3.6Ghz stable might be possible if you have a G0 and it clocks well.

what he said. just be happy with 9x400 & do some research on the dfi forums as to what ram works best on that board. my guess is some micron D9's (ballistix)

what about those:

GeIL Black Dragon DIMM Kit 4096MB PC2-8500U CL5-5-5-15 (DDR2-1066)

(looking further)
