OC Q6600 = Bottleneck for GTX580??

I feel like upgrading but I have decided to wait for some delicious octo-core goodness to drop. So I figure I would upgrade my GTX 9800 for a GTX580. Would this card give me a CPU bottleneck as far as FPS in games ? Thanks in advance

Of course.. a mild overclock to 3ghz.. for some reason with all ram slots filled I can't get past the 3ghz mark. No idea why that is. Maybe I should wait a month to see what amd releases in one months time. Anyone have any ideas ? Perhaps a single card solution
 
what res are you playing at? with a Q6600 at 3.0, I would probably save 150 bucks and go with a gtx570.
 
dont worry about the cpu bottleneck, just get the best value at the price range you are in.

That way you wont ask "will this cpu bottlenecked by my xxxxxx?" next time you upgrade cpu.
 
I would say the cpu _is_ a bottleneck, but ... here's the thing. Are you pulling 30+fps on your favorite games? If so, going to something like say i7 920@4ghz will pull say 100fps, but it will hardly matter beyond the magic 30.

then why get a faster card since 30fps is magic? lol
 
Getting i7 probably isn't going to get you 100fps when the same card gets you 30fps on your Q6600. GPU will influence your fps much more. No sense in getting GTX580 though. If you have that kind of money to spend, might as well wait for Sandybridge. you can get away with a GTX570, or 6970/50, and still be gaming just fine.

well, since he has a cpu bottleneck, he can now up the image quality like AA AF, texture sizes and a faster card will keep the same fps but with more eye candy.

I was just setting an example here when I said 100fps.
 
yea q66 is OLD hats now.. i7 4ghz is where it's at.. Although even that can't run the beloved starcraft 2.... Sand-b can't come quick enough
 
Q6600 is plenty of power, just not as efficient as the i7. I wouldn't count it out unless you're moving to new socket. Most Q6600 I know can hit 3.0 or 3.2...you should definitely overclock it.
 
If you can get 3.4-3.6ghz overclock on that cpu it should be fine for higher resolution gaming. That being said, you should be able to get a high percentage of gtx 580's potential.
 
the better Q6600's can do 3.4-3.7 with really good air cooling. They run great, just hot.
 
Don't buy a 580

If you want nvidia go 570, if Ati I'd buy a 6850 in your case


To be honest, a 460/6850 is best gpu for your CPU IMO. That will sti play games for another couple years

sort of depends on res though. at 1920x1080 a 570/6950/6970 would not go to too much waste at all with a Q6600 at 3.0.

My monitor is a 52" LCD, so the highest I can play @ is 1920x1080 or 1080p.. Do you think a 580 is a waste?

Currently I'm clocked @ 3.0ghz

I was planning on getting a Sandybridge, but I don't want the entry level offerings coming out in Jan. I am waiting for till Q3 for otco-core Sandybridge to upgrade the cpu. I figured I would get the GPU now.

Yes, thats EXACTLY what I'm looking to do, crank up the AA to 16x and run BFBC2 on max settings.

Well, I just pulled the trigger on the EVGA SC 570 from newegg.. $369. They are local to me so I usually get my oder the next day even when selecting the lowest price shipping option.

I still want a CPU Upgrade but I just can't see going from a quad to a quad at this point in time.

Hell NO!!!

Your CPU when you play games is workoing 30 percent to 70 percent. You still have resources available, so that is not bottlenecking your 580. Your getting the most you can get out of a 580. Even if its stock 2.4Ghz its still powerful. gg and gl
