OC newbie seeking step by step guide to OC?

hi, i just got my system together and its been running pretty stable. i don't necessarily want to OC, but i want to know how it works. my system specs are in my sig.

i was just wondering if theres any step by step guide to oc'ing. there seems to be so much, i've heard about voltages, upping fsb etc, really don't know where to start or what the best way is. speed, stability, and longetivity are my concerns. i won't be cranking it up super high so it burns out in a year, but a few extra mhz would be nice.

For starting your thinking too deep .. step back ... all you hafta do is change that FSB setting in your Bios and your overclocking ... go slow ... like as in 10Mhz for the first step and then 2Mhz extra after that testing that your computer loads into windows each time you make it higher !!!

after you get too the point where your system wont boot into windows then go back into bios and put it back too the last setting that did load into windows /// IMPORTANT don?t jump ahead and put it up too high because your system wont boot and you will need to unplug the power and pull out that pin next too the battery or next too the Cmos Chip on your motherboard ... your book will tell u where it is and how to clear Cmos Clearing Cmos will set your FSB back too its defaul setting, your system will boot again and u can start all over!

anyway back to overclocking ... when you get too your max speed that windows will load into then its time too test for stability .... play some games run some benchmarks make sure it doesn?t freeze or crash .. if it does then go back into bios and put it down 2Mhz then test at that setting too see if its "now" Stable.

if it is then your finished and you?ve overclocked .... if u wanted to go higher you would hafta change the Voltage too your CPU but the overclock you get from Default Voltage is FREE SPEED !! that doesn?t hurt your CPU or degrade it.

VERY SIMPLE VERY EASY its the best way too overclock when your not interested in getting the max and you dont feel like sending your CPU too hell.

just take it step by step and don't up the voltage too much on anything. It just ain't worth ruining yur nice new system

thank you for the reply..do ram timings come into play when you OC the FSB method?

OCing and not hurting the processor sounds very nice, my memory is PC-3500 so I hope it will do a little extra at least.

edit: i also noticed unlike my MSI neo-2, the asus doesn't have a northbridge fan. just a heatsink. is this a problem? do i need to buy an aftermarket fan for it, or remove the northbridge and lap it then put it back on? (scary, might void waranty)

I'd just check under the heatsink for proper thermal paste.
(Dont do it thou ,,, if you have no Thermal paste to re-apply)

Then see how far the MB will go. You can always tear it apart again to put a HSF unit on instead.

As far as memory timings,,, set the Cas to 2.5. And use timing settings like 3 6 3 3. (for now)
And dont go over 2.8 on voltage.
(i dont know your MB BIOS paramaters)

Use Memtest86 to test your memeory for errors.
(runs on floppy DOS)
