OC a retail Opteron 165, should I replace the retail fan?

One of these coolers will certainly buy you better overclockability and lower temps.. They're all great heatsinks, but consider a Zalman CNPS9500 LED as well... It outperforms the other Zalmans and most likely the XP-90 too (unless you mount a fan of at least 60CFM 😉)...

It's Zalmans greatest, and cools better than water cooling 😛 I know, it's very expensive, but it'll provide you with some of the best air cooling around, whilst staying quiet...

Thanks for the advice guys, any idea what Ghz I can expect from the Opteron 165? I was hoping for about 2.6Ghz.

That is reasonable if you have a good stepping at stock voltages with retail hs/f

Well I am using an ASUS A8N-E MB and will probably go with one of the after market HSF (probably one of the Zalmans, since they come with a fan.)

I have no idea steppng on the ASUS A8N-E, but should probably be sufficent. ASUS typically makes a decent MB for OC.

Hmm, should be no problem in combination with a powerful PSU and a decent mobo...

AMDZone manages 2.5GHz...
This fellow at the AMD forums gets 2.61GHz with a Zalman 7700-Cu...
A guy at this very own AT forum gets it to 2.43GHz with stock cooling...

LOL, I didnt even think about the PSU when I was considering components for OC.

I bought the Antec Sonata II, which comes with a 450W PSU.... hopfully that will be enough, since it is sitting here by the desk P.

Those are decent PSU's, not the most powerful around, but you can rely on them... An Opteron 165 at stock already consumes 110Watts... You're dealing with serious stuff here, especially when overclocking...

EDIT: This is the one you have in your case, it provides 32Amps on the two 12V rails, which is excellent... Don't bother, your PSU will be fine...

haha, i hit 2.9 with a stock heatsink, dont diss the stock heatsink

actually the stock heatsink sucks

big typhoon is by far the best one to get, though the new zalman isnt bad at all.

Pick either the new zalman or the typhoon

I want max performance, and both are quiet, so i took the typhoon. THe downside is it is harder to install and is just massive.

I had heard of the typhoon, but had not considered it since I thought it would be alot louder than the Zalman.

I will look the specs up on it, thanks for the reply.

Just too bad Newegg doesn't sell the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64... I have one, and it is a very good heatsink, it is a lot cheaper than the others, while being very quiet too...

ZZF has them, but they're out of stock for the moment... 🙁

This one should be considered too IMO...
