Okay, I have searched previous posts on this forum and have realized I have the earlier version of the P3 500 and can only get about 600 mhz out of it. Thats fine with me, putting together a new comp anyways. Now just two questions...How do you get 600mhz, I can only get 575mhz? and how come device manager reports 256mb RAM when I have 512mb installed.

FYI

mb: Asus P3B-F
cpu: P3 500 (the older one, slot 1)
RAM: 512mb

to get 600MHz you'll have to run 120fsb, something which most 500 katmai cpus wern't able to do. suggest you try bumping up the cpu voltage a tad (0.05-0.1V) to see if your chip will do 120fsb but don't be disappointed if it doesn't.
as for your ram, 256MB dimms *must* be double-sided, two-bank dimms based on 16kx8m sdrams.
They can be registered or unbuffered/non-registered, either will work. if not you system will only see half the ram! :)

Hey, thanks bacillus, that really helped. My cpu is now running at 600MHz,

Okay, now I have more questions...about the ram,

<< 256MB dimms *must* be double-sided, two-bank dimms based on 16kx8m sdrams >>

Does this litteraly mean that the Dimm must have sdrams on both sides of it? If that is the case, I do have double-sided dimms. Anyways, more importantly, does my system not take advantage of the ram that is there and not recognized?
