OC 2.8C to 3.4 ?

Below you will see my system...

currently i have the stock heatsink... what is the BEST heatsink/fan to OC with? I want to go up to 3.4 GHz

I have hit 3.4GHz stable with my 2.8 Prescott and the stock HSF but the temps were a tad too hot for my liking so I backed off a bit. Are you using a Prescott or a Northwood. If you have a Northwood, you might be able to hit that with the stock HSF.
 
generally a heatsink upgrade wont be enough to gain you another 180mhz. If you are stuck at 3.22 now I wouldn't expect 3.4 with a new sink.
 
The Best combo is the SP-94 or XP-90 with a Vantec 92mm tornado for air cooling. Just you will need a fancontroller because that sucker is like vacuum cleaner loud. I personally use a thermaltake 92mm instead. BTW is that 2.8 a Northwood or Prescott?
 
yea you keep posting but haven't mentioned if its a northy or pressy. are you doing all this asynchronous?

"2.8C" is a northy.

You should be able to hit 240FSB with your setup as long as you have fan ratio at highest 15/16 in bios.

If not, then it may be your mem....so loosen the timings, worse case, use 5:4 than 1:1 divider.

As somebody mentioned before, getting aftermarket cooling will not necessarily solve your roadblock.

Intel stock hsf are massive copper base and they do an adequate job.

 
I use an Intel copper heatsink, if you can find a dealer that sells them separately. Newegg had mine refurbished for only $5 shipped. To make the noise tolerable, I use a zalman fan mate 1 rpm adjuster, only $5 at Fry's, good for lowering rpms by about 50%.
 
You should be able to hit, 3.4 with your 2.8C. Hell i have a 2.8B not quite as friendly when it comes to overclocking compared to the 800FSB version of the p4. I think you should have an easier time to oc to 3.4. Right now i am at 3.4Ghz with my 2.8 p4 533FSB it took me forever to get the right combination of voltages and fsb to make sure it was stable. Just make sure you use a program like prime95 to test the stablity and that you have proper cooling for that cpu.
 
mhmmm at stock cooling my cpu (at 3.3 GHz) goes to 52 C when working. 36 C when idle :/ so i think i have to buy an aftermarket cooler.

Do you think it's worth buying a new cooler? Or should I just buy a new A64 939 system?
I'd rather not spend that much money but this computer is ruining my game-performance. i dont know why. @ 3.2 GHz i'm getting 16,690 PTS in 3D Mark 2001... a little low, isnt it?
 
Well right now teh p4 when oc to 3.4 will do you fine. I dont htink its really worth the money to get a new cpu and mobo for like 300 total at least when you can spend like a good 40 on a good heatsink for your cpu. The p4 will last you awhile so not unless you want to drop that kinda of money
 
My P4 2.8C maxes out at 3.29Ghz (235 FSB) with 1.65v on an Abit IC7.

I'm not using stock cooling; have a Zalman 7000-something. My case has tons of airflow as well.

I guess I just didn't get a great 2.8C. *shrug*
 
Mine does 3.5 and 1.65 with stock HSF. I added a Zalman to run it cooler. I have 3200 OCZ so I run the ram 5:4
 
my old 2.8 did 3.3 unstable

new 2.8 does 3.5 on stock voltages but i dont keep it at that speed for 3 reasons, ram is unstable at 5:4 since it's pc3200, dvd encoding program doesn't like my overclock 2.8 @ 3.5 cuz of ram but runs fine if it's 1:1 fsb 220, i'm using stock intel hsf.

got a sp94 coming in, should help with temps 😛
 
I have a 2.8c running 3500 in my wife's machine. It does it at 1.58V with a Vantec Aeroflow cooler.

It is the luck of the draw with regard to overclocking.
 
My 2.8C, D1 stepping, is running at 3.5Ghz (250 FSB) at 1.45V. I've run it all the way to 3.6Ghz but backed down just to be safe. Stock HS is fine at full load (DVD ripping), but I had to run with case open to keep it cool. So I installed a Cooler Master Cu HS and closed the case 🙂 even at full load. BTW, the temp is 44c idle, 53c full load. Also my CPU has 30 caps on the underside.
