At work here, other people refer to anything that's not finished as "beta". From a letter that needs proofreading, to any product that is in development (and not actually in a beta phase).

No kidding.

"Alpha" is for things that are in develpment and not for use by the projected target audience yet.
"Beta" is for things still in development but mostly completed, i.e. only a few, minor things to resolve.
"Gamma" should be used more. 😉

I remember my first beta. It was for a game called "Phantasmagoria" by Sierra (a GREAT game btw). When I got the discs, some of the scenes were still bluescreened, and after the 30 day beta was over (definatly not enough time to finish this HARD game) I got a THIRTY PAGE questionarre to fill out. Betas now might as well be called 'stress tests' or 'previews'. Their only real purpose seems to be PR and an excuse to do a reset after the worst of the bugs are found. Then again, thinking about it, the reset effect isn't necessarly that bad . . .
