Of course we still have to see what is actually proposed before we can draw final conclusions. Any proposals coming from obummer and his minions is usually filled with rampant stupidity, but this one seems unusually reasonable. Paid time off for parents (not just women by the way) allows for parents to spend critical bonding time with their kids, which seems like a good investment for everyone. Pretty much every other civilized country allows for this.

One interesting note is that obummer has taken to using presidential memoranda instead of an executive order in an attempt to downplay his unilateral executive actions. I'm sure plenty of fools will fall for it.

Next he'll be wanting companies to give employees paid vacation time like every other country in the first world. We'll be a god damned socialist state disaster like Germany at the rate we're going.

The executive order for fed employee parental leave is just advancing them sick time not accrued, not giving them additional "free" time off.

As for a blanket nationwide sick leave policy, it would depend on where the exemption line gets drawn. That being said I have no idea what the proper number is, should it be businesses with 50 employees or more, 500, something else?

The devil is always in the details, which have yet to be proposed, so we don't know yet. I'm not opposed in principle, but I'd like to see what the details would look like.

He won't rest until he turns the US into a communist trainwreck like those Scandinavian countries.

Supposedly, the proposal is based on a 15 employee minimum.

And why should it take $250M to implement?

Unless one is working hourly it is likely paid already and per what others have said it does get abused sometimes.

Guessing mostly costs to reprogram pay systems, since each agency seems to have their own. Add in some budget for training materials and couple auditors for oversight and that's probably your $250MM.

Why? Is this such a problem that it merits federal intervention?
The name of the game right now is to put forth anything and everything that the Republicans might oppose. 2016 POTUS is the prize. This is the political process in the U.S. and we allow it to happen. Final victory trumps everything.

Tons of people have paid sick days along with maternity and family leave. This is all just politics.

A lot already have paid sick leave, although not necessarily seven days, so this may end up being a slight bump for a few people.

As for the family and maternity leave, that's a joke in this country.

We provide no pay and the least amount of time off for maternity leave. FMLA for non-maternity is OK, I suppose. I know people who abuse it and have gotten it taken away because of it (I.e. only seemed to need it on Sundays during football season), but plenty who use it for what it is. I can't say I'd really change that.

"What is the most admirable creature on God's green Earth? Why, it's the bee! Have you ever seen a bee on vacation? Have you ever seen a bee take a sick day? Well, my friends, the answer is no! So I say, be... the bee! Be the bee!"
