I have a loud system, but I like a lot of different kinds of music. From Aimee Mann to DMX. I listen to classical, jazz, alt, and rap. All of that music benefits from a good system.

I 100% agree! My question is why do I hear most loud systems playing rap/techno most of the time?
because the majority of the owners of loud systems listen to rap/electronic solely I would assume

Spooooon accurately stayed "I listen to classical, jazz, alt, and rap. All of that music benefits from a good system."
I don't think spooooon represents the majority
so why do people who listen to rap/electronic tend to have the most loud systems?
The majority of those who listen to rap/electronic might not necessarily have loud systems, but the majority of those who own loud systems probably listen to rap/electronic exclusively

ok... I think I've figured it out!

The majority of cars with loud systems have owners who like rap/electronica.
To have a decent loud system you need a good chunk of expendable income to dispose of.
Todays 16-20 crowd seems to have a lot of expendable income (if they aren't paying for school)
Genres most popular to todays 16-20 crowd are rap and electronica. QED???

Of course I don't have any real data to back this up, it's all based on assumptions :p

That is like saying most people who have geforce 4's and 19" monitors use their computers to play games. Hell, I didn't even really like rap before I got a system, but when that type of music takes advantage of my subs...then I listen to it. However, I never get tired of seeing the expressions on people's faces when I put the radio on the oldies station and blast bass from that! :D

Sorry, but I don't buy that analogy... All music benefits from a good system. A geforce 4 is designed to run games.

kt - I just made an observation, I never dissed them in my original post... I listen to electronic music too (lots of krautrock and spacemusic), but it's not 99% of what I listen too. I've gotten a few laughs when I have had They Might be Giants cranked though :p

Just to say it up front, TMBG is one of my favorite bands. Could their music be heard in 99% of it's range with aftermarket speakers and a nice head unit? Yes. Do you absolutely need subs to get the full effect of TMBG? No.

I disagree. If you want to hear the full sound spectrum of any band, you need subs. Listen to SEXXY without subs and then with subs... I believe the live version of 'Like an Angel' off of Severe Tire Damage has some deep bass too. Another example of wear subs really make a song sound amazing is Rush's 'Lock and Key'. Those taurus pedals flesh out the song in a totally different way when you have good low end frequency. Anyways, to apply this somehow to the discussion... people play rap because they have loud systems? To have the sound system dictate whether you like a band or not doesn't say too much about that band.

I agree that ALL analogies are suspect (and yes, I stole that from Starship Troopers). What I am saying is, when I was 16, posessed a stereo worth more than my car, and the money to buy a system, I would ride around blaring bass from my '87 Cutlass (okay, I still do this :)). I was not making a generalization; I started listening to rap and techno because they were what would thump my speakers, and they grew on me. Yes, I agree that to hear SEXXY in all it's glory, or Mr. Excitement (not sure of spelling) from Mink Car, you need subs. But for Ana Ng, Purple Toupee, Birdhouse in Your Soul and We Want A Rock, two twelves sound about the same to me in richness as some nicely amplified 6x9's.

I usually crank punk and ska from my computer in my dorm... Sometimes some oldies. Too many people like rap around here, ugh.

Maybe I'd play loud music in my car, but my car does not exist :).

LOL!
There is a classical piece called 1812 or something with sounds of cannons. Crank that up when cruising, but do it far away from the police.

Mucman, do you really want an answer to your supposed observation? It would seem to me that if you are as curious as you profess, you would be willing to reexamine your observations so you could understand your own question.

I should remind you that when you use the term "most", then you are admitting a qualifier there for comparisons. Hence, there is subjectivity. And as far as my observation too, heavy metal, techno and rap have the exact same tendency with loud . . . or loudest, to please you, systems. Why you keep ignoring this statement and focusing on techno and rap makes me wonder where exactly your bias is directed. I will concede that rap and techno have loud systems, but to exclude hard rock is preposterous. Sorry I cannot help you in your disingenuous attempts to uncover a supposed truth.

Do I want an answer? Hmm... I think what I would like is cold hard. It's true that I am basing this only on my own observations. By saying most I am just trying to avoid the "all such and such do such and such" statements. Obviously there are always individuals who break a stereotype. I almost never hear anyone driving down the street cranking metal...
