That's a pretty extreme abberation.

Not necessarily does the best running team always win, but you need a decent running threat to open up the passing game.

So you can see teams get outrushed and still win, but they usually have pretty good balance.
They don't need to blow the other team off the line for 300+yds rushing...just enough to loosen up the defense so they can pass.

Generally speaking, when a team's winning, it'd be running more to keep the clock running later in the game. Also a "good team" is usually said to have a good run defense, and that's also partly because when you're leading late in the game, the other team's passing on you, so of course you'll yield fewer yards on the ground. You do that for a few weeks then TV analysts will come to the conclusion that a team has a good run defense. A good running game is certainly a piece of the puzzle, but often times it's the effect of winning, not the cause.

Pretty much, running the ball well means your defense is getting lots of rest which means your defense will have more energy to stop the opposing offense. Plus there's a lot less risk if you run the ball vs. passing the ball.

Yes it is true, running the ball well helps your defense. Passing the ball well makes your defense very tired.

Running the ball effectively is very important to having a successful team. It takes the pressure off the passing game, preventing the defense from dropping back both safeties, which can in turn open up receivers deep. It also keeps your defense off the field resting. It also controls the clock, so the team that is winning runs the ball more anyway.
