Oblivion - so, I've been wandering around for three real days now...

MichaelD

Lifer
I've been around the video game scene for awhile now (original Atari when it was NEW, anyone?), but I'm new to RPGs. Diablo (a lot of it!) is about the level of my experiences with RPGs.

So I bought Oblivion, loaded it up, loaded the latest patch and started fragging away...or not. I found out quickly that you don't frag in this game...you must "finesse" it.

I've never built any characters outside of Diablo before, so I just went for it. I'm a male Imperial, sign of the thief or something like that. 😀

I've been wandering around in this game for about 72 hours total (game says 9 days, but I've got about 72 hours total of playing time). I've died a whole lot. Stupid imps. I've learned to save every time I kill something and before opening any doors. I've also learned a few tricks. Like running into a room with enemies, then running back to the room I just left, with some allies in it. I let them fight while I hide. 😀

I've closed one Oblivion Gate (the church by the Gold Coast) and completed some quests and stuff. I slept in some Slave Quarters for 5, 10-hour sessions in a row and my skill levels increased to Level 4. 😕 I just did it. Skill levels kept going up, then stopped. Very strange, but now I can kill those stupid wolves in 5 hits. :thumbs; I managed to enchant my sword with Silence...neat.

I've got decent armor (I think) total armor level is 14. Is that good? I've taken armor off dead allies. I've dropped damaged armor and picked up better armor. I've learned how to fix armor with the hammer. I've made some potions and poisened my arrows and sword.

I guess I want to know, what happens now? Am I doing OK? Is the whole game like this? You just wander around, "leveling up" completing quests? I have come upon more than one village where everything is locked or "stolen merchandise" (the hand icon is red). So I couldn't do anything there! I've already found out what happens when you steal stuff. :Q

Now you talk.

it's an open-ended game....but i would suggest you do the dark bortherhood quests (kill a person and just sleep, someone will come to you when you wake up). There are MANY side quests in this game.

Dude! I was just in their castle! There were only two places I could go. Upstairs via the teleport thingee you step on (they told me I was trespassing, so I left) and the doors that go to the inner courtyard, but you need a key. I couldn't find a key, and everything else in that first room is "stealable" but I didn't see a key. Stealing is bad, and I only have 200 gold. 🙁

Very light spoilers below!

Interact with city folk. There are hundreds of quests waiting to be found. For example, murdering an innocent commoner (then sleeping) will earn you a visit from the Dark Brotherhood. Or, speak to a branch leader in any Mage's Guild outpost in a major city and you can start working your way up. There is a trader in Chorrol who becomes missing. Heck, a whole town's population goes missing. There's an overbearing captain in Cheydinhal. Dozens of caverns to explore. Thieves Guild. Fighters Guild. Daedric quests.

Use your quest log (same menu as the map) to help work your way through. But if you're already this lost (no offense), I highly suggest buying the official guide.

LMAO!! Indeed, I'm WAY lost. I"m just wandering around, killing animals, skeletons and imps, but afraid to do anything else. Maybe I should start over?

You're not doing the main quest? Definitely join the Mages and Fighters guild. Even if you don't do their quests, joining gives you access to their halls and lots of stuff inside.

IIRC, I am following the main quest. I followed whatever they told me to do; that's what got me to the first Oblivion Gate. After that, I wound up in jail and just started wandering from there. 🙁

I played some Oblivion and it seemed like a good game. But for some reason I can't get into. Mostly I think its because its sorta complicated and I am afraid I'm doing something wrong. I keep hearing its not a good idea to level quickly because the monster level to and become harder to kill. I would buy the guide but I ain't a big fan of reading books and that is a huge book/guide.

Do yourself a favor and join the Dark Brotherhood. This can be done by killing someone....anyone. Just be sure you do it when no one is around (if you really want to be safe about it, find one of the altars scatter in the forest and kill one of the worshipers).

Also, depsite that stuff being "locked" or "red icon'd", you can open and take anything you please -just do it when no one is around or watching. First crouch (left ctrl key by default), wait till the little eye icon (your cursor) is faded or transparent, that means no one is watching you. The more you crouch and sneak around, the more you'll boost your sneak level.

Honestly though, playing through all the guilds (Theives, Fighters, Dark Brotherhood, and Mages) was more fun than the main quest IMO.

open your quest log and select the main quest. then just look at your big map and go where it tells you.

Strategy guide was the best investment I have ever made in ANY game, period. Its 368 pages long, and details every quest for every faction. HIGHLY recommended. I even read it in the throne room for additional information on several obscure quests.

Whoa! I didn't know that!!! I didn't know the icon changes colors! I got so tired of stealing a potato when nobody was within 1,000 feet, yet getting caught by a guard as soon as I stepped outside, that I stopped taking anything. 😱 Great info!

The game is great...it's just so big and varied that it's hard to tell if you're doing well or not.

Thanks to all!

See, that's not really the Elder Scrolls attitude. You "do well" in ES games if you're having fun and enjoying your character. If you approach the game like Diablo (which is a fine game also) and get all worried about character builds and power-leveling and 5x multipliers, you're just trying to make the game something it's not. Oblivion's game system is terribly easy to abuse if you put your mind to it, though less so than Morrowind's was at least. That doesn't mean you should become a hippie and wander the land ogling the scenery (though some people do), but don't get hung up on where your at or where you're "supposed" to be.

If you want some moolah there's an exploit to dupe items. I forgot how to exactly do it. You have to load back an arrow and hold it, while holding it you switch weapons. Then you drop the item you want to dupe and then right after you press the drop button you switch back to the bow, and the arrow will hit it in midair and like a million of them will sprout out of that 1 item. Scared the ****** out of me the first time I did it. 😀

it is my first Fantasy RPG . . . and i have well over 1,100 hours into it.
[playing the mods . . . now]

really

first thing . . . head over to the Official Oblivion forum -"Cheats, hints and spoilers" and read the PINNED FAQ [i'd give you the link but it appears to be down - first time today]

1) Join Factions . . . here you get Quests and advancements and many skills. There are a total of 9 to join . . . you can become the head of 4 and get 'apprentices' to follow and help you.

2) Start the Main Quest [see pinned faq] . . . it is the "story" and when you get the book "the Real Barezeniah, vol 1-5 - READ IT! . .. it is the background for your Char in Oblivion.

and DONT WORRY that you are doing something "wrong" . . . you 'can't' unless you start wildly killing NPCs that might be needed in a future Quest. 😉

There are over 200 Quests and hundreds of places to explore . . . including 90 [ninety] unique 'wilderness' Oblivion Gates to close {with awesome enchantments available from the 'Sigil Stones' at the top}.

Have fun!

EDIT: START HERE----->FAQ-Cheats, Hints, Spoilers, For your convenience!

and visit the Oblivion forums . . . i am also a 'regular' poster there. 😛
[it is a VERY addicting game ... i have a few Oblivion "firsts" to my credit]
😱

😀

EDITED . . . again . . . Original Atari, huh? after Pong i skipped the console in favour of an Atari 800xl . . . Miner2049er was my favourite PC game . . . or was that on the Atari 7800? . . . Genesis was my LAST console] 😛

and i would not use any 'content' mods until you are 'finished' . . . they sometimes interfere. Texture mods are usually 'safe'.

i finished the four main guilds (dark brotherhood, thieves, mages, fighters) the arena and the main quest line and traded it in. there were a lot more quests, but i had my fill doing all that other stuff. it's a neat game, but gets repetitive.

You can also download some great mods for this game. check out this web site for some of the best mods that are out there.
You might also want to check out the official website for more mods. Lastly check out this website for new player models, they are much better than the original.

I condsider this mod a must for Oblivion. Natural Environments

If you havn't gotten it already check it out. (also as a note only use the file that your using. You'll know it when you see it. It's either Bloom or HDR. Don't use both of them at the same time).

I could go on and on about Oblivion mods, but I don't want to bore you.

This is because you only actually level up when you sleep. When you walk around killing things, buying things, picking locks, etc, you r skills go up. When X number of skills have increased (I forget value of X) you get a little noise and an icon telling you you have havce levelled. To _actually_ get the benefits you must sleep in a bed - then the icon disappears and your attributes (the ones corresponding to the skills you've been using) are increased. This means that if all you have been doing is knocking things out with a club, the only attribute multiplier you will get is strength.

It's a good system, but I _hate_ the implimentation of it, as do most people. I aslo hate the scaling of monsters. As you get stronger, with better weapons and armour, your enemies get the same stuff! Automatically! It takes away all sense of progression.

IMO the game is unplayable without a whole series of gameplay mods. These are available on the elderscrolls.com forums - try a full rebalance mod, like Oscuo's Oblivion Overhaul for a _far_ superior gaming experience.

no . . . as you scale up only a FEW of the monsters scale with you. Finally, you [should] get WISER and better weapons, so you always have the advantage over scaling with them. The sense of progression is there.

The real problem is that the world never really reacts to your becoming "hero". 😛

The 'cheats' are "100% Chameleon" and the Wabbajack . . . either of them overused BREAKS the game [making it more like a 'walkthru]

Wow! Nice to see so many others addicted to this game as well! 😀 I just finished playing for about another 4 hours. 😱 Went by in an eyeblink.

I turned down two quests (one of them was the cheating husband who lost his wedding ring to some female thieves). I also got scared when I worshipped at some rock with red writing on it and I wound up with this evil mask on my face. :Q I just loaded the save from a few minutes back and skipped that part. I don't want to be evil...yet, at least.

Thank you for all the links and suggestions. I'm completely fascinated by this game. 🙂
