This is the first game I've ever preordered and first collectors edition too. Also, blew a lot on a 7600gt to do it justice; my 9600 ran smooth on crap settings though (wish I didn't buy it as a bide-me-over card:().

But why are you glad of how well a game sells? Most are glad if a game is awesome in both gameplay and graphics, but how well it sells is a new one on me.

Because when good games sell well that means they'll make more of them.

Uh, Warner Bros *did* make the LOTR trilogy. New Line is a division of WB

Expansive, open ended gameplay without being directed towards senseless violence is something a lot of people have been longing for in games for a very long time now. Very rarely is it done, and unfortunately to date the only remotely viable hit that there has been is Morrowind(and that is only on relative terms). These types of games are incredibly expensive to do, and if they don't end up being a hit the company involved ends up in a lot of trouble on a financial basis(dev houses will likely close up shop). It appears that current sales trends indicate that Oblivion will smash through the 3 Million unit mark relatively quickly- that means a $150Million revenue title. That is the kind of money that entices publishers to put up the money so we can see more top tier exmaples of the type of gameplay found in Oblivion.

All too often titles like 'The Matrix' end up pushing out huge numbers while games like Mafia/Eternal Darkness languish on the shelves. Publishers see this- they give people what they 'want'. We really don't want that- so let Oblivion hit 10 Million units and I would give you ten to one odds that a lot of other publishers and hence developers will get real interested in this type of game very quickly.

It's one of the few stand alone games for the PC I've bought in a long time. I'm using a 6800GT and just finished the tutorial. I had to turn off self shadows as it looked horrible, though everything else looked fine. Though when I popped out of the level I saw the washed out textures at a distance. I probably end up picking the high quality texture mod up.

As much as I want to ignore this game, the numbers and buzz as well as the glowing reviews are tugging at my wallet. I'd prefer to wait until all of the bugs are worked out before buying it too. But I will never buy 'special content' such as armor for horses or other fluff. The day I have to pay to play a game that I really want to play online is the day that all my hardware goes to the FS/FT forum. That will be one big list of hardware, too.

it is to RPG what DeuSex is to FPS. ;)

an awesome Hybred that is understandable & accessable to most of us

i have a PILE of RPGs that i could never get "into" . . . only KotOR series held my interest because of its awesome Story [and i HATE the real-time turn based fighting] . . . . . . Oblivion has the same fighting [on the surface] as a FPS. ;)

and Oblivion was incredibly expensive to make . . . they deserve to make a profit and continue making these awesome games

That's right. Clearly Oblivion has been designed for the mainstream and has undergone a bit of console-ization, having more in common with FPSs now than most other 'RPGs' out there. Further games in this series will probably move more and more to the FPS side, while simplifying the remaining RPG elements. ES5 (if it gets made) will be completely designed around the consoles.

Personally, I have never gotten much out of the ES series, and I played Arena all the way back in 1995. Not much has really changed since then. Making the game more mainstream is certainly a smart move on their part.

The game is selling well partly because of the hype but also because it IS a great game. I thought everyone understood that.

Unless of course you don't think it's a great game.

Just to clarify, who were you referring to when you said "why are you glad"??

The only flagrant consolization I see is the UI, but I never played TES before this. Find and download the BTmod for the UI, if nothing else it makes the font a lot smaller so you can see more at once.

I'm also waiting for a mod/hoping Bethesda will patch the hotkeys to Half-life style, so you can have sub-hotkeys. 8 is just not enough, especially when reaching from WADS for 6, 7, 8 is a PITA.

QFT. Very true. This is one reason I'm glad it's selling well. I'd be very interested to see the XBox vs. PC sales though.

The last game that did that was farcry... Farcry was a game to make mass upgradtion

Well, I'll honest I like the fact that RPG's (and MMO's) are becoming more accessible to the "rest" of us. In the past, RPG's were just too "nerdy" for someone like me that considers FPS the best game genre. I really have started to enjoy the other genres more over the past year though, and I don't think the reason is because I've become considerably more nerdy (maybe a bit), but because these games are appealing to a wider audience. I'm sure it does kind of suck for the "purists" that the games have been dumbed down to make them appeal to the rest of us, but then again there will always be 20 sided dice and LARP'ing...

arr , Farcry came out before Doom 3 , HL 2 and Fear. Farcry was the overall best looking game untill Oblivion came out.

From a long time FPS'er to a first time RPG'er (last one was final fantasy 7) I must say that Oblivion is easily the best game I've played to date. Very immersive and just down right fun. While the "open" format was intimidating at first, especially after all the linear FPS games, it becomes a complete delight once you learn the basics of gameplay.

I'd highly recommend this game to anyone and can't wait for more from the TES series.

Did you ever play Morrowind? The GOTY edition is only $20, and is worth every penny. Check it out if you havent.

Oblivion is great though. Heavy on the hardware, but its great. Havent played Battlefield 2 or CSS for a while.

Yeah I was mostly a FPS player but started to get bored with them. The last RPG I played was KOTOR 2...that was a great game with a great story but I hated the turn based fighting. I'm glad Oblivion has FPS-like fighting.

I liked Morrowwind but it's a very hit or miss game.

I haven't RPG'd since the Baldur's Gate days. FPS eye candy games came one after another, dominating my PC. Half Life 2, Doom3, Quake 4, etc. Even ones with good storylines left me wanting more.

How good a zombie looked as it lumbered towards me has done little to justify $50 bucks for the game, let alone the hardware to run it well.

From all indications, this game truly seems a worthy investment. My adventure begins tonight. I've read and prepared more for this game than any other. I've a list of new components, including a modded 7900GT ready to go. Plenty of firsts, including my first time volt modding a brand new graphics card, and first time using non-WHQL nVidia drivers.

In short, I'm excited about this game. Will be a nice change not getting my @$$ kicked online in Quake 4. Will be nice to adventure again...
