What is the hype with oblivion besides graphics anyways? I heard it's part of the elderscrolls series or something like that, wasn't this confined to a certain group of people? I have a feeling I'm missing a lot here so it'd be nice if some one were to clue me in as to why I should get this game.. (Had the same feeling when I first heard about farcry)
To be honest, the graphics just serves to finally fully submerse yourself in the Elderscrolls world. Its what you can do in it that is what really makes this game great. You can do whatever you want. Don't care about the main story, just want to go around getting the best loot? You can do that. Want to murder an entire town just because you can? Want to just stroll through a vivid land and see the sights? There's so much you can do, and while the game does a great job of making you the focal point, it also does a convincing job of making it seem like the world would continue on with you there or not.
Its kinda difficult to describe, its just something you have to experience. For some people, it can be overwhelming, while others it doesn't suit. For a lot of people it is very engrossing and enjoyable. There's so much to do, but its not like say WoW. You're not trying to get the best stuff so you can be better than other people, as since you're playing by yourself you don't get stuck in some rat race so to speak of outdoing other people. You can take your time and do whatever you want whenever you want. Its cool to see how your character progresses, and how people react to that. Starting out people just treat you as any other person. Eventually they start to know of you and react to that (so if you do happen to go and kill a bunch of people, your infamy will spread, while at the same time if you're doing noble deeds they'll greet you as a hero).
Its a very dynamic and cool world. Steal something? No problem. You can pay a fine, go to jail, or you can resist arrest (and your chance at doing the last part will depend on where you are when you decide to do so, as if you get caught pickpocketing out in the middle of the market plaza, you'll have several guards to contend with).
Oblivion is more or less an exceptional idea that has finally been polished to the point where it trully shines. Morrowind, and I'm sure the earlier Elderscrolls games showed flashes of brilliance, but were marred by some poor points (battle for one in Morrowind, and a lot of the land was drab). They've fixed a lot of the problems with Morrowind, without taking away from their great base concept.
