I'm glad it's selling very well. I myself bought the collector's edition. This game proves that if you make a great game, you don't need to put copy protection on it. I believe all it had was a DVD check.

Anyway, I haven't been this enthralled in a game for a long time and I have no regrets in spending money for this game.

The actual release says 1.7 Million shipped, but that is a small issue. The good news is that a great game is flying off the shelves.

This game proves that if you make a great game, you don't need to put copy protection on it.

I'd love to see the sales of Oblivion tracked against any heavily copy protected title.

Had my mom buy it for me the day it came out (with my BB gift cards, of course). $36 (BB PM'd to CC). Awesome game, I'm kind of hooked :p

Yeah, this is great news for the genre. It won't support a ton of publishers, but a couple more wouldn't hurt.

Playing it on the new 7900GT tonight.. excellent game. Wish it didnt have that infernal Xbox360 influence though on the interface.
Dumbing down our games for their kids controller.

Beautiful graphics, great gameplay and overall the closest I've ever felt to living out my medieval dream.

I figure $60 spread out over the 60-100 hours I play this game will be worth it :)

Crazy Theory: People who purchase Oblivion usually have high end cards? Meaning $60 isn't much for us fat cats.

So true. To put it nicely, the game's audience was broadened. The UI is definitely just a console port. They did nothing different for the PC. PC was a second thought. Watch out for the official forums...A lot of fanboys that defend the game. I played all the previous Elder Scrolls games, and this one is definitely "dumbed down".

well when morrowind was out , the pc sales were pretty low and developers weren't happy with profit but all changed when they did a quick pc port to xbox where it sold like hot pancake at that time because Xbox didn't have many rpg at that time. Most of the Oblivion sales are from the xbox 360 anyways. Hardware compatibility , System unto required specs , Buggy OS and the major reason : Piracy ... these are some reason why developers make great sales on consoles than on pc.

I don't mind the UI, but it's certainly got a strange feel. Still, I wouldn't want to control my swording with a controller (though I'm sure I could easily get used to it).

Anyways, who really cares? The game is wonderful, PC graphics own Xbox's graphics, and we can get dank mods. We win!

Thats great to hear.

I would like to know the Percentages of 360 vs pc copies sold, since i actually have a "high end" pc and an xbox 360 and i chose the pc version, for the very reason Shortass mentioned about using a controller.

Regardless though, the game is a work of art and I'm thrilled to hear its selling well, it DESERVES to be noticed.

And Bethesda really DESERVES the sales.

I STILL find myself playing it and thinking "my god, i cant image the amount of work that went into this title".

This is a great game so far I must say & I'm glad to hear its selling well ... I'm afraid its pushing my 6800GT to its limits though & I may finally have reached the forced-upgrade point, framerates in outdoor battles get slide-show ugly & barely playable with HDR or AA enabled and thats only at 1024x768!
Looks like time for PCI-E & X1900XTX -or- 7900GTX! (Now I just have to decide which!)

Edit: CPU is Opteron 170 @ 2.4 with 2gb RAM on MSI NForce 3 Ultra

call me a cheapskate then . . . i only spent $39 the day it came out and game on a cheapie $200 AGP x850xt . . . and it looks awesome! :)

it's worth it already for me . . . beautiful game gfx and some depth in the Story.

i already have 80+ hours into it and am having a blast - it's my first Fantasy RPG [KotOR being my only other RPG] and figure i have well over 100+ hours to go . . . letsee . . . $40 for 200 hours entertainment is $.20 an hour . . . no SP FPS can touch this kind of value [and it does kinda play like a hybred-FPS, at least to fighting - which i really like].

I hate the UI too.

Yeah, there's a mod which is apparently decent. I've been too busy playing to fiddle around with the config files and work out what to do though ;).

Great news! Fantastic game.

It has a DVD check when you start the game, but that's it.
You can make a copy of the disk to back it up for personal reasons without issue.

you guys do realize that this game might be on the path to becomming a killer Application. as those of us who bought this game on PC also had to buys new video, cards, extra ram, , better cpu.

at forums, some have also bought a new pc just to play this game.

when was the last time you had to spend $500-$1,000 in upgrading to play a game that costs $60??
. i love oblivion..........................

You don't need to spend money to upgrade for this game.

My roomate has a 2.6Ghz P4, 1GB RAM, 9700 AIW and he's been playing it fine. Likes it as much as I do.

Its still a very good excuse to upgrade though. :D

With some further development, this game engine could really start to shine (its certainly got some stiff competition though from Source and then Crytek Engine 2 and UE 3.0 before too long). Imagine a Lord of the Rings game,

If they figure out a way to expand the game world more (I would have no problem with a 10-20GB install size if the game is good enough) and add multiplayer, they would rake in the dough like crazy. Multiplayer always makes a game more fun. Even if they can only manage 4 players or so, that'd still be awesome. My roomate and I constanstly talk back and forth about where we are and what we've found, recommending good places to get loot.

I can't wait to see what mods crop up. Most of the time, mods for PC games are not that good if they even get to the point where they're playable let alone enjoyable (saying mods is a big plus for PC games is overused and in my opinion that that valid). But every now and again there's a game like this that just screams for cool mods.

This game engine seems perfect for a remake of Ocarina of Time.

It runs on a gforce3.

Yeah, it runs. It make me cry, but its too good not to play. Its only unplayable when there are multiple Character races on screen. A few monsters doesn't end up being so bad.

But yeah its convinced me to get a new comp.

I upgraded mine pretty much just for this. As such I don't really care about longevity etc of the PC, so long as it plays this well, which it does. Ended up splashing about £800-£1000 on everything. Oops.

Still, at least it looks fantastic ;)

What is the hype with oblivion besides graphics anyways? I heard it's part of the elderscrolls series or something like that, wasn't this confined to a certain group of people? I have a feeling I'm missing a lot here so it'd be nice if some one were to clue me in as to why I should get this game.. (Had the same feeling when I first heard about farcry)

To be honest, the graphics just serves to finally fully submerse yourself in the Elderscrolls world. Its what you can do in it that is what really makes this game great. You can do whatever you want. Don't care about the main story, just want to go around getting the best loot? You can do that. Want to murder an entire town just because you can? Want to just stroll through a vivid land and see the sights? There's so much you can do, and while the game does a great job of making you the focal point, it also does a convincing job of making it seem like the world would continue on with you there or not.

Its kinda difficult to describe, its just something you have to experience. For some people, it can be overwhelming, while others it doesn't suit. For a lot of people it is very engrossing and enjoyable. There's so much to do, but its not like say WoW. You're not trying to get the best stuff so you can be better than other people, as since you're playing by yourself you don't get stuck in some rat race so to speak of outdoing other people. You can take your time and do whatever you want whenever you want. Its cool to see how your character progresses, and how people react to that. Starting out people just treat you as any other person. Eventually they start to know of you and react to that (so if you do happen to go and kill a bunch of people, your infamy will spread, while at the same time if you're doing noble deeds they'll greet you as a hero).

Its a very dynamic and cool world. Steal something? No problem. You can pay a fine, go to jail, or you can resist arrest (and your chance at doing the last part will depend on where you are when you decide to do so, as if you get caught pickpocketing out in the middle of the market plaza, you'll have several guards to contend with).

Oblivion is more or less an exceptional idea that has finally been polished to the point where it trully shines. Morrowind, and I'm sure the earlier Elderscrolls games showed flashes of brilliance, but were marred by some poor points (battle for one in Morrowind, and a lot of the land was drab). They've fixed a lot of the problems with Morrowind, without taking away from their great base concept.

i know OBLIVION runs fine on avg computers, and feels great, but in my opinion what makes the game standout is the graphics engione and the lightning and the physics. you cannot truly appreciate the game without most of the details turned on. the graphics just adds to the realism and the feel of the gameplay which is what makes it as good as it is.

Analogy:
its just like comparing a good vodka to a cheap vodka. both of them would get the job done and make u drunk, but the difference is the taste and the feel of the russian vodka.

(See below link on the vodka wars)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/bw/20060410/bs_bw/gb20060407359060

i understand that older generation video cards run this game just fine, that is because they do not have the advanced shaders and the hdr to deal with.

less details= faster performance, but also
less details= less realism of gameplay

LORD OF THE RINGS ANALOGY
now imagine if the LORD OF THE RINGS movie was made by warner brothers, and the kind of bad job they are doing with editing, Nowimagine if the whole (all 3 of them) LORD OF THE RINGS series was condensed and edited into one movie of 3 hours just like what they are doing with harry potter moveis. would you really like it?

its all in the details my friend

its a trade off that many of us cannot bear and hence the need to upgrade to something better for details.
