Oblivion safe storage of items

I seem to find conflicting info from google searches... BTW.

I have found that my stuff stored in different fighters guild halls barrels have disappeared. A big bummer. Apparently, that is par for the coarse in this game.

So I bought a house, but I had suspicions, and searched more. Some people say don't store items in trunks even in your own houses that you buy. Some say you can and the items wont disappear.

I have some items I just don't want to sell and don't want to lose. Yea, I know there are some command line commands to get things. But, as soon as I cheat, I lose interest in games.

In regards to trunks in my own house, will these items eventually disappear as well?

BTW, I'm surprised there isn't a generic Oblivion thread.

Thanks.

White Stallion Lodge, use the chests and lockers in there once you have access to it after you finish everything regarding Mazoga the Orc and that Black Bow Bandit cheif guy that I can't remember his name. You'll receive a key to access the Lodge from Layawiin's Count. I never lost any stored items (80+) thanks to that place (there might be others though but I'm not aware of 'em).

I stored all of my stuff at the cheapest house (in the chest and drawers, of course) and never noticed anything disappear.

I got the house in Anvil (I think it was anvil). It comes cheap for the quality of the house, after you complete the quest associated with it. Since it comes pre-furnished, you don't have to buy a thing.

I believe you shouldn't use any chest you don't own or have sole control over. Even some of the mods have chests that will loose items. (The mannor one comes to mind.)

Just drop them on a floor. Seriously I never, ever lost anything lying on the floor even in streets of the Imperial City. Those citizens of Tamriel are more honest than God.

I own and use the Cheydinhal and Bruma houses, and I've never had anything disappear from any container in them. This is supposed to be the way the game works. There are a couple of odd containers, where I've noticed that items will remain, such as a chest in the room you rent at the Grey Mare in Chorrol (don't trust me on that- test it); but if you own a container, your items should stay in it.

If you play through the Thieves' Guild Quests, you will eventually gain access to the Thieves Guild Hall. Inside the Hall is a tiny room/closet with a door. I used that closet to store everything. It looked like a dump but was free and nothing ever disappeared.

I don't recommend putting your shiz into boxes/chests/barrels in places you don't own (I'm not sure about *all* places but...) because at the beginning of every week (Sundas), the game "resets" all the chests in the game.

So yeah, just drop it like its hot (no pun intended for thieves)

I used to to mod Oblivion, and kinda still do, but IRCC most of the chests respawn regularly. Forgot the frequency of the respawns though. There are a couple mods out of there that can make all chests "safe" for storage.

I did find out the hard way about leaving stuff in the chests in the Anvil house BEFORE you complete the quest.

It WILL reset the house and all the chests and lose all your stuff... :( No fun if the lich fight was hard won.

Other than that, I did find a few chests that would steal your stuff. The chests in houses you owned all seemed to work. When starting the game, I'd stash stuff in a barrel in the sewers, in the market district. That seemed ok.

In my games I always get the Anvil house as my first house and just turn the chest in a room on the second floor into my storage chest. The main things I ever end up storing are teh crystals from Ayleid ruins and the Daedric artifacts that I don't keep on me.

By the end everything I carry is just found armor that I enchanted and like a couple of rings that I found.

Best thing in the world to do is hit every Oblivion gate and get just the stones that give resist magic until you wear armor that's 100% resist magic. The game becomes much easier when the NPC's can no longer hurt you with magic. It makes all other items you get fairly useless in comparison. Once I had that I started selling just about everything.

Almost the very first thing I happened to do was the quest in Aleswell (on the ring road north of the Imperial City.) When you finish that you get a free bed and a chest in the inn. The chest has been 100% safe.

Search for and get the basement mod - it enables an underground cave area that you can access from every house that you own, and has several rooms, storage, an alchemy lab, etc. With it you can very easily centralize storage of all your belongings instead of scattering them all over the lands in your various houses or other buildings.

Without that mod (and the one that improves the info displays, forgot the name) I wouldn't have played Oblivion for more than a week... with it I managed to last nearly two months before the consolitis and deadpan repetition got to me.

If you're homeless, just use the chest that Jauffre unlocks for you in Weynon Priory (but only that one particular chest in the priory)... that one doesn't refresh.

Or throw it on the ground, as mentioned, but an unarmed NPC will pick up a weapon lying there if they decide to fight something.

Usually I just bought the Imperial City shack and stuffed it full of crap. Keep in mind that the list of contents for a container will truncate if there's a lot of total weight in it. It's not gone; it just won't all show in the list unless you remove some. Not sure what the exact threshhold is.

Thanks everyone.

I had already bought a house, but the chests and barrels came with stuff in them, so I became suspicious that I might continue to lose items if I don't visit it for a few days and the game might do that refresh thing it does with other containers. But I see the consensus appears to be that it is safe to store items in containers in my own house.

Thanks.

Another place is the Captain's chest on the Pirate ship after you've completed that quest for the Thieves Guild. I used that one for quite a while till I save up enough money for house. I never bothered buying the shack cause the ship is sooo much cooler to have.

You've been gone too long.
There were several.
The moderators got tired of it and consolidated all of them into one.

But it passed its prime a while ago.

The easy way is to buy an official house in the game or download one of the MANY house mods available on the net. The one I like best is the aforementioned "all in one basement". It puts the exact same basement underneath each house in the game. And you can warp between them once you buy 'em. It has an alchemy item sorter and a CRAPLOAD of storage for you.

Most of the house mods have all their storage containers details "respawn" box unchecked.
Which means it doesnt fill with goodies over time and wont replace your junk either.
You can also do that yourself with the contruction set included in the game.
