OK, am I reading that correctly?! Windows XP required?!

Yeah, which possibly means starforce some have suggested. I'm not "upgrading" just for this game regardless. There better be a work around for 2K.

I could understand sticking with Win2K, say, 4 or 5 years ago - before XP received a service pack or two, but what is with the huge reluctance in upgrading?

The lack of any benefit in doing so. Doesn't make sense for me to upgrade to an OS that isn't really any different or better. Why would I drop an extra 140 or so dollars on nothing when I could use it to buy some PC hardware?

$145 is with it. Actually $290 in my case because I can't go buying myself a new os and not my wife now can I?? :p

I grabbed XP pro through one of the hot deals on this forum for like $39 back in the day - it came with a pack of Big League Chew, an XP-branded baseball, and even a bobblehead doll! I'm not sure they have deals like that anymore though... You could look into getting an Action Pack subscription, which I have as well, but I'm not sure the licensing covers your situation...

I would want the tree to fall purely as an emergant property of the physics engine. I want dogs to chase cats in the game, not because dog296 is scripted to move in a particular way (boring, pointless), but because the AI of the creature tells it to chase anything smaller than itself. I want the game to present me with completely different situations every time I play.
Now we're talking. Real AI and physics. Mindblowing stuff, not the scripted bs we have in droves today. Unfortunately, I don't expect we'll see anything like this for years yet.

The AI in oblivion has me pretty excited. Still, I'm going to have to wait and see on this one.

I'll probably upgrade one day, maybe even this year. Until then, any game requiring XP is out of bounds for me.

Well, it looks like a benefit would be the ability to play some of the latest games now, wouldn't it? ;)

From a QA/development perspective, I can totally understand why companies are starting to list XP as a requirement. Any time you can limit the number of permutations in supported environments (What OS? What video card? What sound card? etc.), it's a good thing - why do you think developers love consoles so much? - it's for the most part locked down.

In all likelyhood it'll work fine on 2K anyway. Those OSes are so similar you basically have to work to make it NOT work on both of them.

Well MS did it for AOE3, just checks if XP is installed, if not then no install. you can get around it, but in the end it prooves that they worked to have it not working on 2K.

"yeah, Morrowind sucked monkyballs. hell, it still cant run decently on my current rig (3500+ with a 7800 GT) "

It have the same setup and it runs perfectly on my system....

"Same with the soul gathering. It never seemed to make a difference either way. "

Soul gathering could make some of the best items, such as a constant effect restore health ring, or a sword that does kickass damage on strike (such as that scimitar you get in Mournhold), or you could have a knife that cast chameleon on strike so you feel more like a 1337 ninja. Enchanting and soul gem gathering gave a heck of a lot of choices when it came to what your weapons were gonna do; same thing with customizable spells.

Also, you could sell them for a lot of money. How much was a GOlden Saint worth? 80 or 60k?

Plus, its just damned cool to trap the soul of a named enemy, such as Dagoth Ur's little followers close to the last battle of the MQ.

FAQ still says "early 2006" but the rumblings from retailers is march 22nd. But that honestly means nothing. The release of system requirements is an important step, but I wouldn't hold anything up as concrete these days until I had it in my hands!

To anyone who's interested, a couple of the preview articles have mentioned the kind of system they were allowed to play on. Here is a quote from one article:

Graphics look like they're still being optimized. The rig they set me up on was a powerhouse--a Dell 3.4GHz packed with an ATI X1900 512MB card. The video settings were set at a modest 1280x768 and anti-aliasing was turned off. There were some occasional stutters, and I could (albeit on rare occasions) see some stitching lines between textures. Performance seemed pretty similar for this machine as it was for the Xbox 360s running Oblivion on the other side of the room.

A couple other articles listed here also mention a 3.4Ghz processor, 2GB of RAM, and an X1900. One previewer said that the game ran perfectly smooth for him and that load times were pretty quick, but noticeable.

I pretty much have exactly the Reccomended specs.

Looking forward to this game. I have it on pre-order (and I almost never pre-order... mostly wait for reviews to come out).

Yeah, I'm a bit worried now. That x1900xt takes my SLI 6800GTs to school, and I am really looking forward to playing at 1600x1200. The AA being off doesn't surprise me since all the screenshots have had HDR all over the place and they've been looking very good (if maybe a little jaggy in some parts).

Makes me wonder which will give better performance and graphics quality-- HDR + 0xAA or Bloom + 4xAA.

And will *any* video card solution be able to handle 1600x1200 well? I'll be willing to spend anywhere from $450 (for the XT) to $580 (for SLI GTs)... I just hope benchmarks start showing up soon.

Yeah. I'm a little worried too. Since my motherboard shorted out a few weeks ago, I decided to build a new system after Oblivion comes out. I'm hoping that I don't need a $500 video card to run the game well though.

Somehow I don't think the GeForce FX series would be on the supported cards list if it chokes @ 1280x768 0xAA & 0xAF on a X1900XT.

Based on the Recommended & Min specs in their own FAQ i'd take the 3.4GHz P4, 2GB RAM & X1900XT with a pinch of salt.
