Oblivion gets a bad review!

wtf?

Its not IGN that gave the bad review, but some mag gave it a 6/10 (Stuff Mag)! WTF can all this waiting be a waste and Oblivion be bad? I hope not!

Edit: add poll so that you may score it yourself, please comment on your most favorite/dissapointed part.

Why not? They just report on a game as they see it just like everyone else. 😛

I'd trust a review from a source I know can appreciate such a game as this than that. Anyone can play games, not anyone can play all games or even write reviews.

Rofl, are you saying that a person who could appreciate the 'content' in a magazine such as Stuff could not appreciate a game such as this?

I don't know...if you asked me to review say...different baseball bats I'd give them all low marks because I don't really give a shat about baseball bats.

Oblivion has so much hype that you could have people reviewing it that don't even know what Morrowind is. They'd probably rate Morrowind a 3 on the same scale they used for Oblivion. Given that, you have to put their review into perspective, that perspective being NOT A GAMER. What you want is a review from someone who actually played Morrowind such that, as a gamer, you can acurately guage how much of an improvement the game is. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion on Oblivion, but most of those opinions will be worthless in helping another person decide whether this is or isn't a good game.

Im not going to judge the game until I actually play the damn thing, but the 1/x reasons why I want the game is to look pritty, and with a ****** college lappy, that isnt goin to happen. I hope that the Story and game content are enough to keep me involved and wanting to play more.

I do tend to have roughly the same views as IGN for some reason, so I will look into their own review before I make a purchase descision. Always have friends that will buy the game.

But yes this game is all in the view of the author who probably doesnt have the same views, comitment, or gratitude for this genre as the rest of us do. It is his/her own personal opinion and he is intitled to it, but it does seem a little off when the average user review is a 9.3/10.

You sound like you already have it out for this game.

I pre-ordered because I have liked all of the Elderscrolls games before this one and I will play this one as well and form my own opinion.

You probably don't even have a clue what Oblivion is. There has never been a bad Elder Scrolls game, all have been well above average.

I just watched the 12hrs of gameplay at Gamespot.com. GameSpot executive editor Greg Kasavin played the xbox 360 Oblivion for 12hrs straghit and i can tell you right now the game is freaken awesome. from what i have seen this is the best action adventure RPG game. At no one point of his playing he was like god where he could kill any of his enemy with such ease. if he leveled up so did his enemy. I saw on frame issue at all and no IQ problems. Game ran pefectly and had alot of good gameplay and world is huge and beautiful. Graphic are awesome and best looking RPG i have ever seen. The game will get over 9.0 easy.

Dude i just watched about over 11hrs of oblivion gameplay :! i saw no bug in this game. ran smooth , no frame rate drop or anything. The game looked great all time and was just great.

Anyone who takes the opinions of a freaking lad mag like Stuff, Maxim or FHM seriously about games is a frigging MORON!!! I've seen 5-star reviews for games that have been delayed until after the magazine has hit the stands. If PC Gamer or any of the legit game sites/mags hasn't gotten their reviews up until just about now when they probably got their review copies the day after it went gold, what could a mens mag that went to press a couple of months ago possibly have played?!? A beta? Jeez, what a bunch of maroons. When a legitimate game review place bags on it, then there's something to discuss. Trust Stuff to bring pix of hot trampy babes into your home, not to review games.

I read Stuff when I take a dump.
I read PC Gamer for computer gaming.
I read ESPN magazine for sports.
I read Computer Music for sequencing tips.

I certainly wouldn't trust a game review from ESPN magazine, nor would I look for sequencing tips from Stuff.

Going on a game review from Stuff is like buying a car based on the review you read in Better Homes and Gardens.

If you're willing to read a game review in Stuff, then you totally deserve to be misled. I wouldn't trust them to review a 6 pack of budweiser, and besides that, it only went gold a little while ago, isn't there a lead time before something can go into print.

Most heavily hyped games are pretty good actually. There are always a few that really blow it, and then there are some sleepers that come out of nowhere (Far Cry), but the vast majority of very good games have been pumped from 6 months to a year before their release. Civ4, HL2, FEAR all had hype machines behind them and were excellent, occasionally you get a Doom3 that really disappoints. Game publishers aren't all idiots, they tend to put their marketing dollars behind things that they think will sell, and reputable game mags and sites give space and previews to what they think looks most promising.

A few things here bother me about the reviewer...

first...

"Oblivion auto-detected the settings at Ultra High, albeit at 1024x768, with no anti-aliasing.
Bethesda recently announced that the PC version of ES4 cannot have both HDR and AA, but it looked quite nice with just HDR. Load times are faster on the PC, but the visuals are about equal. The 360 version of Oblivion does both HDR and AA and runs natively at 1280x720. If you have a 360 and a video card that's less powerful than a 6800GT or Radeon X850, I would recommend getting the 360 version. As with Morrowind, Oblivion is a demanding game."

This segment obviously shows the guy is just trying to say anything to get attention.
SLI/crossfire will open up the possibility of AA and HDR at the same time. Beyond that...(which doesnt matter all that much in my opinion)
He goes on to say that the xbox360 has both and he tries to make it seem like it runs at higher resolutions.
Xbox360 does 4xAA and 4xAF. Personally, I prefer AF over AA and 4xAF doesn't do much for me, 16XAF is a very small performance hit, running a game with no AF or 4AF...Im sure we can all agree...its not very pretty to see image quality decay so rapidly. My point...there are positives and negatives to both PC and XBOX...He's trying to start a flame war over his article for attention....and so far it's worked.

Are you really going to read a review from a guy that blew up his own computer and so he writes it playing on his buddies dell?

"pulling out a torch or some levitation spell instead of your sword, things can go downhill rapidly from there."

hes talking about getting too excited during combat and hitting the wrong macro/hotkey

Had he spent much time playing the game he would have realized there is no levitation spell.

"Overall, though, I found the inventory interface to be a little problematic. There are no tooltips to pop up and tell you what you're actually looking at."

this guy has been using nothing but windows and excel for far too long. You see the weapon's stats...what else do you need? "This weapon you found in a MacDonald's Happy Meal....an unorthadox weapon favored by retards and small children" again this guy is just saying things to stir up controversy.

"If Dan hadn't been looking over my shoulder at one point, I probably would have had to dig into the manual to figure out how to open the map."

Thank god the guy that owns a dell was there to baby him along in this process.

"This kind of thing should be easy, but Oblivion's multitude of icons combined with a lack of tooltips can lead to quick frustration. Instead of words like "weight," "value," or "durability," you get a feather symbol, a face symbol, and a heart symbol."

This guy is obviously not very bright.
It takes 3 seconds to learn/figure out what these symbols mean for an average human being.

"I understand this makes localization easier, but I wish that didn't come at the cost of forcing the user to dig through the manual so he do things like swapping his bow for a sword, removing an item from his inventory, or setting up a spell on a hotkey."

Unfortunatly for this man....the controls are a little more complicated than HalfLife2.

"I'm digging the production values, but I'll have to play some more before I can figure out how I feel about the gameplay."

Um you are writing a review...and you don't know anything about gameplay?

"In populated areas or environments with large amount of geometry, the framerate definitely drops off"

really? wow is that a new feature? are they going to make a patch for this? (sarcasm)

"Oblivion is so far displaying some of the best visuals on the Xbox 360. Even with the low resolution textures in the extreme backgrounds"

what about the extreme foreground? 4xAF wont take you very far with High res textures...

"Graphics are far from the only aspect of a title as massive as The Elder Scrolls IV. I started out as a magic focused character with a blade skill, and have so far had no trouble hacking every enemy in my path to pieces."

"Charles did a magic guy, and I did a fighter guy, and he seemed to have made the better choice, so far."

This guy doesn't even know what character he is playing by the end of the article.

All in all I rate this reviews credibility 1/10

Have a nice day.

I'm waiting for Gamespot's review. I tend to agree with them.

I do need a new video card though. I don't want to play it in 800x600 with everything off in my prehistoric 9600XT.

🙁

EDIT: I however fear buying it and never playing it, just like it has happened with every single game I've bought since I got WoW over a year ago.

I simply can't get into single player games any more. I mean, what's the point of getting loot of you can't show it off or you can't use it to kill someone else 😛 ?
