?

Aren't these editons just basically the vanilla game with the expansion packs....

You have the same game just without the expansion pack.

The xpacs are a nice addition to a huge game. If you own the regular Oblivion just snag the addons. Unless you are dead set on having it all on one DVD.

Should be able to, the xpacs are really just introduced by quests. I believe once you install them and then rest you get a journal entry that begins/permits access to the new content. I remember that much at least.

Oblivion: Game of the year edition has the original oblivion and the Knights of the Nine & Shivering Isles expansion packs included. There is also a CRAP load of mods for this game.
-edit- Oh and you will be able to continue on with your current character if you install the expansions.

No idea about a existing character, but hopefully it's just a matter of find the right folder and doing a copy and paste.

I have GOTY and since I didn't play the original without the expansions I couldn't tell you if it was worth it or not, sorry...i can say it's too big for me to wrap my head around though

If you don't already own the original game then its well worth the $40 IMO ... if you do then save your money & grab the expansion packs by themselves.

I installed the xpac to my 50 hour character a couple of days ago, and just continued on from where I was, but with the new content available.

Yes. I have the GOTY Oblivion, and it comes with the Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles. It adds a lot to the game, so I would suggest going that route.
