objectivity test

a few people and websites(including the one the pics were taken from) keep telling us there is no "real" visual difference between PS2 and PS3
so here is the objectivity test, which looks better? the shader model 2 or 3 version? why do they look so different if shader 3 is "identical" to shader 2?

quote from hardOCP.com

"First we thought it prudent to compare realworld in-game SM2.0 screenshots with NVIDIA's marketing screenshots to give us an up-to-date feel for Image Quality in FarCry and what SM3.0 promises. The screenshots below were rendered in the retail version of FarCry with patch 1.1 on a Radeon 9800Pro with Catalyst 4.4 driver and every game video detail set to their maximum values (PS/VS 2.0)."

If the level designer put different details into different models, you cannot compare them. Those are two DIFFERENT statues!!!

oh.. and learn to link!

the whole idea is that since so many more shader instructions are possible allowing more detail in PS3 than in PS2...what would be the point in rendering the model the same as ps2?

so of course the model is different! your objection is meaningless

You are comparing a statue in TECH DEMO for the CryEngine to a statue in the GAME FarCry... also, there are other things to render in the "PS2.0" part... like the plants. So, details will have been turned down.

that PS2 image was taken at full detail maybe you missed this part.

How can this be objective?

because reality is objective.

"Pretty" and "better" are subjective terms. 🙂

3.0 - far more detailed. Of course, it looks like the models are drastically different too.

Since the current Far Cry engine is only using PS3 for performance enhancement, and there are no visible differences between PS2 and PS3 in Far Cry, the perceived IQ differences in the shots are likely not due to PS3 use.

A: In current engine there are no visible difference between PS2.0 and PS3.0. PS3.0 is used automatically for per-pixel lighting depending on some conditions to improve speed of rendering.

The two pictures aren't even of the same model.

Take a look at this for specific information regarding the differences between PS3 and 2:
