Healthy, normal-sized people complain when they have to sit next to a fat person who spills into their seat.

But what happens when an obese person has to sit next to another obese person? Has anyone witnessed this?

LOL, I seen it happen with a fat guy at a window and one next to him in the center.
It was a packed flight, and they spent like 20 minutes trying to get someone to trade seats with the guy in the middle seat.

NO one wanted anyone to trade with him because people were asking other people to NOT trade because they didn't want a fat guy sitting next to them.

It was fucking hilarious. Eventually someone in the back row gave his seat up.

Usually the wing on the side the two obese people are sitting hits the runway on takeoff. The plane then has to return to land. That is why airlines avoid this scenario.

maddogchen is right....if it's a smaller plane. My dad wasn't obese, but was overweight years ago on a flight. He told me he was once on a regional turbo-prop.....they asked him to move to the back of the plane for takeoff to help balance the plane so the nose would raise either. It was a business trip and his colleague/friend started calling him "Ballast-boy"

I was once flew from Atlanta to SLC and was sitting next to a really big guy. I'm not small, but the first thing he did was move the armrest up between us so he could fit in the seat.

1. I wasn't happy with this because it was 2.5-3 hour flight...however long it takes to fly that far
2. He was clean and didn't smell bad (this has nothing to do with weight...just that he was in my personal space)
3. I somewhat sympathized with the guy and didn't make a fuss....he was very polite and seemed like a really nice person. Said he was trying to visit his daughter in Idaho Falls...

A lot of people are obese because of various reasons. Some are heredity-driven, some are psychological issues....not something I would make fun of. I was glad to be sitting next to such a nice guy that wasn't in the least bit annoying (personality-wise).

This internet "fathate" phenomenon is getting a little out of hand.
Skinny computer nerds team up on anyone who doesn't look like them because it's "their fault they're fat!"

Some people are just naturally large.
Yeah it sucks that you have to sit next to them on a tight plane, but such is life.

And no, I'm not fat.

True, but they're in the minority. Most people who are obese got that way due to our shitty western diet and a lack of exercise. So yes, it is their fault they're fat. They also have the choice to do something about it. Props to all the fat guys at the gym who are working hard to make their life better instead of complaining about society "fat-shaming" them.

I sat next to a fat guy once and he did exactly what Scarpozzi described. Luckily I was with my wife so I just leaned waaaay over onto her side.

I have never even seen an obese person on a plane. I must not fly often enough. Thankful for not even having to fly often.

Since >30% of the US population is now classified as obese, I find that hard to believe.

There are so many travel alternatives, Amtrak, BNSF, Maersk, Yellow Freight, etc. that this shouldn't be an issue.

It happens. I was catching a hop from SeaTac to Whidbey Island once and I watched as the pilot of the 8 seat aircraft (not including the pilot and co-pilot seats) lined up everyone, sized them up, and then very methodically sent them to the aircraft to "fill in" the empty seats from front to rear.

Funny part was, I was last on and in great military shape. I climb in the rear door and buckle up and the pilot climbs in past me, straps in and fires up the props. The rear door right next to me is still open, air rushing in, and he turns around and yells back at me "Hey!!! It's gonna be a windy ride unless you shut that door back there for me!!!!" I just started laughing and pulled the door shut and latched it. Half the passengers were visibly nervous at that point and for the rest of the flight. LOL!

It really bothers me. You can throw whatever excuse you want at me for it -- "They did this to themselves!" or "We're trying to help!" -- but the fact of the matter is that you're making a goddamn excuse to belittle other people. For some reason, treating someone like a sub-human is acceptable as long as their condition might be easily taken care of. Let's say that you have a weird accent or pronounce words strangely/incorrectly. Would you enjoy it if I made fun of you for that? I mean... you should know better than to pronounce words incorrectly regardless of where you're from. Keep in mind that I didn't state that I merely pointed it out; I would very blatantly deride you for it. I highly doubt that you'd find it fun... unless you're a masochist? :hmm:

What makes it all worse is that you do all this, and most of you damn well know that some of these people eat a lot because it's their comfort. Comfort from what? All the shit that life throws at them, which includes people treating them terribly. In other words, you openly treating a fat person like shit and them being aware of it only makes the situation worse for those people. So, if that's not clear enough, YOU AREN'T HELPING! It reminds me of a story that boogie2988 (a large YouTuber) told one time about how a good friend of his just started openly making fun of him for his weight (this being years ago), and that just made the situation worse.

For me, this doesn't just include weight. It bothers me when friends of mine "people watch" and openly mock people for stuff like their haircut or clothes. I do not care for people being rude to people (regardless of whether they know it or not) for superficial reasons.

Not that much. Even I could eat that type of shit. Although I now tend to get a smaller shake and get lemonade or tea instead. And I order an extra chicken sandwich or something. Chicken is lots of protein with not that much saturated fat so very good for you.

not sure what point you're trying to make.

the point i was trying to make is if you're a fatty mcfatty who just ate 1800 calories before boarding a plane, i'm not gonna feel bad about talking shit about said fatty on the internet.

I'm 6' 4" and 225 lbs. I remember flying Continental (when it was still around) from the West Coast to DC. We stopped in Cleveland to take on more passengers and a male flight attendant who was getting on (not working - just travelling to DC) was supposed to sit next to me. Even though I'm not fat (just a tall human being) he let out a huge sigh, rolled his eyes and muttered "great". I was pissed and said somewhat loudly "sorry for being here". Needless to say I never flew that crappy airline again. It would have been bad enough for a passenger to act like that, but an attendant?

I don't have much patience for fat (not overweight, fat) people invading my space, but I don't even fit in most full-size (737) planes and I'm around 180 pounds. The problem is I'm 6'4" and airlines are so unprofitable that they cram as many tiny seats into as many planes as they can. Anyone that's taller than 6' or heavier than 250 is better off with Amtrak or Greyhound because the airlines are too busy trying to keep their bloated heads above water to care about outliers like us.

You want to start a movement or something? People like you matter, too. Its worth fighting for.
