Obese People Have 'Severe Brain Degeneration'

A new study finds obese people have 8 percent less brain tissue than normal-weight individuals. Their brains look 16 years older than the brains of lean individuals, researchers said today.

Those classified as overweight have 4 percent less brain tissue and their brains appear to have aged prematurely by 8 years.

The results, based on brain scans of 94 people in their 70s, represent "severe brain degeneration," said Paul Thompson, senior author of the study and a UCLA professor of neurology.

"That's a big loss of tissue and it depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at much greater risk of Alzheimer's and other diseases that attack the brain," said Thompson. "But you can greatly reduce your risk for Alzheimer's, if you can eat healthily and keep your weight under control."

The findings are detailed in the online edition of the journal Human Brain Mapping.

Obesity packs many negative health effects, including increased risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers. It's also been shown to reduce sexual activity.

More than 300 million worldwide are now classified as obese, according to the World Health Organization. Another billion are overweight. The main cause, experts say: bad diet, including an increased reliance on highly processed foods.

Obese people had lost brain tissue in the frontal and temporal lobes, areas of the brain critical for planning and memory, and in the anterior cingulate gyrus (attention and executive functions), hippocampus (long-term memory) and basal ganglia (movement), the researchers said in a statement today. Overweight people showed brain loss in the basal ganglia, the corona radiata, white matter comprised of axons, and the parietal lobe (sensory lobe).

"The brains of obese people looked 16 years older than the brains of those who were lean, and in overweight people looked 8 years older," Thompson said.

Obesity is measured by body mass index (BMI), defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters. A BMI over 25 is defined as overweight, and a BMI of over 30 as obese.

The research was funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Center for Research Resources, and the American Heart Association.

So not only are we eating ourselves sick, we might be eating ourselves stupid too. That would explain quite a bit.

It would explain a lot, however...

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Perhaps eating ourselves into a gluttony is merely a symptom.

red states have more of an obesity problem than blue states. this explains a lot.

Admittedly its a small sample, but the half dozen people I knew who had Alzheimers were skinny all their adult lives. My mother was close to 80 lbs at her death.

It will be interesting to see if other studies support these conclusions.

The results, based on brain scans of 94 people in their 70s

9% with this small of group means nothing. Not saying I don't believe it, but this is not enough study to see. The error rate itself should be around +/- 20% with this small of a group.

Let alone all of them in their 70's. By the time you hit 70's many people are on so many different meds that could also throw out any real data.

This study sounds more like a college students paper work then a real full fledged study.

Not to mention that without complete physical and medical histories before hand we have no idea when the damage is really done.

Not saying being obese is ever good, but this seems like a fluff study.

That's the point, they have too much fluff not enough brains

Great study.

This just shows how many health risks obesity poses to the american people. We need to start looking at this seriously. Who knows WHAT OTHER ailments are caused by obesity.

The statistics are so scary its not even funny. I have friends that go to the Tufts Medical school and Public Health schools. They shared some projections with me a few months back, and the statistics are horrifying.

Basically in 10 years or so, half of all children will likely develop adult onset diabetes at some point in their life if current trends continue.

The generations post the baby-boomers will have a lower life expectancy than the baby-boomers.

At the same time, America consumes more drugs per capita than any nation on earth. (I know this is debatable in terms of good or bad, but if you are taking medication, something is wrong with you, and the underlying issue is just being treated, not remedied)

America has the highest rate of obesity population wide.

If I wasn't obese I might be smart enough to understand this.

This is pretty funny. If it gains any media traction it's really about as offensive to obese people as calling some races less intelligent. Of course they've been deemed that with various and imperfect testing. In this case if you have brain tissue that's less, either they are stupider or maybe only intelligence-irrelevant tissue is gone or their remaining tissue is more efficient, but in any case it's harder to argue.

I think a statistically significant difference like this could be asserted with a group of this size. I don't remember enough about stats to audit these numbers, but depending on how the data looks there are scenarios in which this is meaningful.

Finally, scientific proof that while not all stupid people are fat...all fat people are stupid.

hmmm 300 million obese people in the world... thats not so bad... until you realize that 275 million of those are in the U.S.

Most people only use like 10% of their brain anyway. Are you einstine or what? Is your IQ over 140? I guess people with Belimia are a lot smarter.

You must be fat if you think that :)
