President Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt appealed her deportation order at a US immigration court hearing on Wednesday.

Zeituni Onyango did not speak to reporters as she left the court in Boston through a back door after the brief hearing, which was closed to the public.

She was escorted by Federal Protective Service officers.

The next hearing date is currently set for February 4, 2010, said Elaine Komis, spokeswoman for the executive office of immigration review at the Department of Justice.

Onyango was ordered to be deported from the United States in 2004 but kept living in Boston. In December 2008, following Obama's election victory, a court allowed her to have the case reopened.

Obama, whose father was of Kenyan origin, says he never knew his aunt was living illegally in the United States.

I guess the "fix" is in. I wonder if all of Obama's relaitives who came over for his Presidential Inaguaration are staying too?

I wonder whatever happened to the investigation into whoever "illegally" leaked that Obama had an Aunt here illegally?

The more I see the more I'm convinced that this country is royally screwed, blued, and tattoed. Unless Obama pulls his head out of his ass and starts to take a real bi-partisian approach instead of just giving it lip service, the best we can hope for is more of the grid-lock we had under Bush.

I see no indication that Obama influenced anyone; she probably just filed to re-open the case after he was elected. During the election she was "outed," and she was probably worried that she'd be forced to leave once her status became known.

As for the long delay - it wouldn't surprise me if that's typical.

How is the fix in? 😕 You are allowed to appeal the decision for removal (or as we refer to it, deportation). Talk to an immigration lawyer, this is not at all uncommon. You're grasping at straws.

She had her day in court and lost. What has changed except the fact that Obama has been elected POTUS?

The fix is in, only a blind Obamabot wouldn't see it.

Obama's aunt will fight deportation

BOSTON - President-elect Barack Obama's aunt intends to fight a deportation order and remain in the United States, her immigration lawyer said yesterday. Zeituni Onyango, 56, is staying with relatives in Cleveland after fleeing her public housing apartment in Boston. She had been living there five years.

Onyango, the half-sister of Obama's father, was ordered to leave the country in 2004 by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya. ........

Must be nice, she doesn't have a job but has been living in the US for 5 years. No wonder she doesn't want to go back home. Early retirement at the US taxpayers expense!!

Sure there is plenty more public housing. They can all move in next to Aunty Zeituni.

Do you know what an appeal is? That's what you do when you have your day in court and lose.

She hid for 4+ years and then goes in a second time. Politics is what caused the court to allow her to reopen the case. Politics now is allowing her another year on the appeal. For anyone else, an appeal would have been scheduled for the coming month given her track record or the court would have kicked her ass out after 4 years of hiding.

She lost her appeal and has defied two court orders to leave the country. Time for the bitch to gtfo.

Onyango came again to America on temporary visa in 2000 along with a son who had been accepted at a college in Boston.[16] Commercial databases show she received a Social Security card in 2001 indicating she was legally present in the country at that time.[6] Since 2003 she has been living in a South Boston public housing project, according to Boston Public Housing Authority (BHA) officials.[17] William McGonigle, deputy director of the Authority, noted Onyango did a good job as a public health advocate on behalf of the Boston Housing Authority.[17][18] She also works as a volunteer computer systems co-ordinator for the Experience Corps, a program in which adults over 55 mentor children in their communities.[1]

I don't know, man. She sounds like a nice old lady who makes an effort to contribute to the community. Sure, her visa expired, and she's here illegally. However, I sincerely wonder whether you're being a good citizen and also yelling at the "bitch" cooks at your local burrito place to "GTFO" as well.

I'm not suggesting that she should get preferential treatment solely because her relative is the president of the United States, though I'd like to point out that there are tens of thousands of immigration cases just like hers. If being "outed" for having a lapsed visa gets your water boiling this much, I would suggest that you use that energy to put your efforts where your mouth is, and picket that burrito place you love until they show you the work visas and the birth certificates of their employees. You're gonna be so upset, but you can bring along a paper bag to help with the hyperventilation and/or vomiting.

Those people on death row had their day in court and lost. Are you saying they shouldn't be allowed to appeal?

Obama is POTUS. Do you guys really think she'll get deported?

I hope Obama pulls some strings on her behalf.

Can you provide me proof that the burrito worker is illegally in this country, been ordered to leave the country twice, lost her appeal and still allowed to live in government subsidized housing? Good job of ignoring the facts.

Seems pretty typical. The same people who accused Bush of abuse of power now opening want Obama to do it.

Also, why the hell is Marian Robinson living in the White House? She should be living in a hotel nearby. She's wasting taxpayer dollars. Enough of "I'm taking care of the children" BS. She just wants to live in a mansion paid for by you and me.

If Bush's abuse of power was limited to allowing a relative to stay in the country, this country wouldn't be in the mess it's in today.

OH DEAR--IGNORING THEM FACTS IS SOMETHIN' AWFUL!!1

Edit: And dude, "'Burrito worker' is not the proper nomenclature. Mexican-American edible-wrap artist, please."

My reply to you asked whether you're just as heated about every other blatant violation of immigration law you encounter daily...

You get wicked upset about an old Kenyan lady, who volunteers in her community, over-staying her visa. My question for you was whether you're just as vocal and upset (and whether you're doing anything about it) regarding the really obvious immigration law violations most Americans encounter daily. Are you outraged because this woman is Obama's elderly aunt, or are you truly outraged about her violation of immigration rules?

Put your money where your mouth is, and do some investigative work on behalf of your fellow citizens. Go and find out whether your neighbor, or the guy who cooks your food, or the guy who cleans your apartment/office building is legal on paper. It's your duty as a citizen to investigate and report. Once you do all the investigative work, then you can make a post here and we'll all join you in being "truly outraged." Turn them in, dawg. It's the patriotic thing to do. Bitches need to GTFO.

Again, as I've mentioned in my last post, this woman's case is just like thousands of others. She isn't the only person over-staying her visa, threatened with deporation, and using legal channels to contest the situation.

You were eloquent enough to summarize the situation by asking "the bitch to GTFO." How uniformly do you apply that attitude to questionably legal people you meet every day. Mountain-folk like you don't deserve access to the internets.

you need a history lesson.

edit: as for the OP. I don't know enough about the deportation process to state with any confidence that she is abusing the system. If she has appeal rights based on regulations then she should use those rights. Any smart person would appeal until he/she can no longer appeal.
