I'm not caucasian, and I would not vote for someone of my race if he/she ran for president. I believe that as a nation, we are not ready to allow a non-white man into the presidency.

Sucks for you. However, I think most of America would be fine with a black president.

I wouldn't vote for Obama several reasons, but his skin color is not one of them.

Well - Looking at the history of the Southern States, I'm not quite so sure if most of America would be...

I wouldn't vote for Obama because of some things that happened in Congress

Xylitol, Please stay out of political discussion. Let's take a look at your contribution:

'I don't think American is ready for a black president.'

..ok, how am I supposed to respond to that? 'Yes, America is.'? How productive.

Then, you come back with this treasure... "I wouldn't vote for Obama because of some of the things that happened in Congress"

...why does that cause you to not vote for him? How is any intelligent person supposed to respond to this except for.. WHAT "THINGS"?

You are a completely useless person to discuss politics with, please stop trying.

I got news for ya buddy. The younger generations are overwhelmingly non racist. Obama would be able to pick up the swing states.

Right, there are still racists out there. I live in SC and my next door neighbor is blatently racist against black people. However, there isn't and won't be a mindset of "omg if the black guy gets elected we need to secede!" At least, this isn't the mindset around my neck of the woods. There's too many people that would immediately scrutinize and frown upon these individuals for them to be taken seriously. Like myself.

WTF? I have spoken to hardcore white republicans from Alabama who say that Obama is the only democrat they'd consider voting for. He's the only democrat, PERIOD, who cuts across party lines and I don't think most people give a rat's ass how his skin colour, frankly. What are they feeding you over there in California?

If this country wasn't ready for a black, obama would not be LEADING the democratic numbers right now. His support has gone on too long to be fleeting and romantic; I would say this is incredible evidence of the fact that the US is totally ready for a black president. Some won't vote for a black and some blacks would vote for any black. I doubt that his skin color is playing in to more than a tiny fraction of his overall support or lack thereof.

A candidate can win without the South. Also, Louisiana recently voted in an Indian-American for governor. A candidate can transcend racial issues, even in the South.

Well if anything, it kind of helps that the South overwhelmingly contains much of the USA's black population.

Of course racists still exist. They will always exist. They live in every state and major city at least. Your neighbor is just, as you say, more blatant about his racism.

But I agree with Skoorb. I think the country is ready for him. I might not agree with him on some major issues, but I still like the guy and his wife. I totally wouldn't mind him winning the nomination and the election.

Not everyone is as racist as you think. Maybe your bigotry towards the south has something to do with your misconceptions.

there are pretty large minority communities in the south, and this isn't quite the days of jim crow laws and KKK members riding around to scare blacks away from the polls.

in any event, you don't really need the south and any challenge he'd be likely to face there would be more about Left v Right than Black v White. so he doesn't take Mississippi and Alabama... won't matter if it takes every state that Kerry/Gore took + Florida and/or Ohio.

Yeah, but the first go-round we voted for Kathleen babbling Blank-O who ran against the same Indian-American. She was just as dumb back then and he was just as intelligent. Unfortunately his skin was a little to dark for the voters here. It took Blanko to utterly fuck just about everything up during her term for us to vote in someone who could use complete sentences.

Perhaps Obama will benefit in the same way.

Nice way to ignore the dirty tricks she used to get herself elected for the first time that had nothing to do with Jindal's skin color. He learned a lesson from that attempt which he applied to beat her the second go around. I watched a very good interview with him before this last election where he went into all that and while I don't recall the specific details it had something to do with religion similar to what she tried to do this last election. The difference was he was prepared for it and responded forcefully and quickly in the parts of the state where he lost in the previous try.

I think the people who are uncomfortable with the idea of a non-white president can suck it up, and stop being little babies. Seriously, it's f-ing pathetic.

Edit: This sounds like it was a post to start a flame-war, more than anything.

We as a nation weren't ready to abolish slavery either, but look what happened.

The South can kiss my caucasian ass if they aren't bright enough to vote for an Obama over someone like Huckabee or Thompson.

A southern state (Virginia) also elected the nation's first black governor (Doug Wilder). These outdated notions of the racist South are just that - outdated. There are of course pockets of racism, but likely not much different than the rest of the country.

Ah, looks like Hillary has her surrogates out again

Not only is this country ready for a black President, Obama stands a significant chance of being President.

LOL at your "The South" tagline.

Basing your vote on skin color would make you a racist.

Congratulations.
