I thought Obama was supposed to get us out not fund to stay in wars. What was his "campaign promise" again? 6 months? 12? 18? This pushes the total for war funding to almost 1 trillion since 9/11/01. story

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is seeking $83.4 billion for U.S. military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, pressing for special troop funding that he opposed two years ago when he was a senator and George W. Bush was president.

Obama's request, including money to send thousands more troops into Afghanistan, would push the costs of the two wars to almost $1 trillion since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks against the United States, according to the Congressional Research Service. The additional money would cover operations into the latter months of this year.

Maybe Obama just wanted to get 1 bill passed that had Bi-partisan support. Seems like the only Bill that could get that done....

The "No" vote buttons were probably being replaced in Congress today.

WTF? Have you been living in a cave with the terrorists for the past 2 months? It's 16 months for withdrawal. What? Do you think the hundreds of thousands of troops in the theater can exist on zero dollars? Dude, pay attention FFS.

What happened to 32 billion? Did it jump 51 billion that fast? Was only 2 minutes.

Republicans seem to forget Obama ran on a platform that included leaving Iraq and putting MORE focus on Afghanistan.

Yeah Obama wants out SOOOO bad! Text

The supplemental-spending request is intended to provide funding for the wars through the balance of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, and into the early weeks of fiscal 2010. Beginning in fiscal 2010, Mr. Obama intends for the wars to be funded as part of the regular Pentagon budget. That is a change from the Bush White House, which annually sought war funding outside the regular military budget.

Obama said he'd withdraw responsibly and that's what he is doing. If he just withdrew all troops tommorow, the Sunni and the Shiite would tear each other to pieces. He needs to have a phased withdraw, and leave some troops behind for stability in order to keep the peace. Remember, Iraq is a Democracy still in it's infancy.

I hope you are right. Although the text from that article can be taken two ways. Either it is continuing the budget for the pentagon as it stands (which means decreased funding overall, or will the funding for the pentagon be increased to compensate? We shall see.

So I ask, how large is this residual force that we've been talking about from day 1? It seems like most people think it means 99% of all troops are leaving Iraq under the roughly one year timetable, but I think they are delusional.

Are you even capable of cogitating and illustrating your complaint here, or is this just a knee-jerk red-faced response of faux-outrage to everything Obama does, regardless of what it actually is or why it's actually being done?

It has been known for a while that it would take billions to pull out of Iraq within the ~1.5 years originally stated. You're handicapped in some way if you didn't figure that one out.
