Bush, 2000: I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, we're going to have kind of a nation building core from America? Absolutely not. Our military is meant to fight and win war. That's what it's meant to do. And when it gets overextended, morale drops. I strongly believe we need to have a military presence in the peninsula, not only to keep the peace in the peninsula, but to keep regional stability. And I strongly believe we need to keep a presence in NATO, but I'm going to be judicious as to how to use the military. It needs to be in our vital interest, the mission needs to be clear, and the extra strategy obvious.
Yes, fight and win wars. Not to do nation building. And we need it to be in our vital interest, with a clear mission, and an obvious exit strategy.
Bush, meet Bush. It's clear you've never met.
Both McCain and Obama are marketing "change" because that's the in-thing right now. It's clear by the low poll numbers that Americans don't like what's going on in Washington right now. Thus the big thing is "change." I doubt it will happen, because change invariably means causing hardship for some people. People who might make up large voting blocs. People who might control considerable amounts of wealth. People who might have considerable influence.
Both are more of the same. The question is, which "same" do you want: Democrat-brand Sameness or Republican-brand Sameness?
The same BS happens in product marketing. "New and Improved" might mean that they changed the packaging, or made an utterly trivial change to the product. "OMG, this toilet paper now comes with sepia-tone rolls instead of plain brown???? WOW!!!!!" New and improved.
