Better would have been 6 months completely tax free. No income tax, no state tax, everyone would take home all their money. At least _that_ would have stimulated the economy....immediately, not Obama's version of immediately.

Obama epic fail!!!

This could be done better if it used all his promises about wiretapping, indefinite detention, gay rights, and foreign torture chambers.

If we count all 57 states we are losing 500 million jobs per month.

Those are the facts, end of story.

6 months of tax free, or even half taxes, would have done wonders to boost the economy. It's not all about statistics, when a family sees the news announcement "no taxes for the next 6 months" the father immediately thinks "thank god, I'm instantly making 35% more money, I'll use this to get a new car, or get ahead on my mortgage, or take my wife out," or any number of things that provide jobs. It's probably one of the best ways you can stimulate the economy, whether you're in a national crisis or things are doing just dandy.

As much as I would love for this to happen, Vic is right. Without the taxes to pay off interest on our debt, we would be in a world of hurt. Of course, it's a shame we are in this position to begin with, but that's another story for another day.

Fine, I'll admit that it might not exactly work out to everyone's benefit, but it would definitely stimulate the economy, and not just those who still have jobs. But I doubt you could convince me that something like 800bn in lower taxes spread out over 6 months wouldn't be worse than what we have now, with what, 200bn going towards earmarks and whatnot?

Very little of the stimulus $$ dispensed is creating jobs. Much is accelerating budgeted work or retaining (Fed/State/Local) taxpayper supported positions. What little jobs that are being created are for monitoring where the $$ are going. The strings tied to the stimulus $$ make it difficult for the State/Local to have much flexability - much of the $$ are earmarked by Congress.

You sure about that? It's all speculation and theories.

The problem with the whole deal is nothing should have been done to stimulate the economy. Any plan from the getgo was determined to fail. Economic slumps just need to be ridden out.

(BTW, whose idea was it to have a stimulus plan from the beginning?).

This is no "slump".

At that rate everyone will be out of work in two years or less depending on the childbirth rate. Glad I retired.

Interesting how the "defense" against the OP is focused on the comments made in the OP, not the video content/link.

Hopefully people will start seeing the stimulus for what it was-- a blank check for the democrats to do what they wanted. How much is it helping? 23M jobs lost since it was passed...the truth is self-evident...

Oh stop pretending to care about spending and job losses NOW. Your kind played dead for 8 years while we were getting to this point and now all of a sudden you give a shit. K.

I'm finding it difficult to look past that terrible mistake you've made. Even at 1 million jobs per month, which it has not been, that would only have been 7 million. Your number given is impossible. It is not the truth.

600,000 new claims/week, math works out about right...
Text

Video was probably using a different metric that keeps track of the lost consulting jobs and people who have to go from full time to part time.

We have been losing appx 600k jobs per month, not per week. 600k new claims per week is balanced by appx 450k new jobs hired - so the loss is 150k per week or 600k per month - averaging it all out.

Anyhow, it is to be expected - after the economy tanks - job loss starts 6 months later... and when the economy turns the corner, hiring is also 6 months behind. By the end of this year is will start improving and the hires will be outnumbering the loss's.

Nice fuzzy math by you and your article though. if I were as dumb as the average republican base I would have bought it LOL.
